MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN SUITE - Parts & Score
Available £72.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, Beginner/Youth Band
Composer: Haakon Esplo

Grade 2.5
Duration 7.25

Mammoths were a family of elephants that, with one exception, died out at the end of the last ice age. Their closest living relative is the Asian elephant.

In many places in the world one can find mammoth remains. In Norway (especially in Gudbrandsdalen), 20 discoveries of teeth and skeletal remains have been made after mammoths that lived here between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago.

On cave paintings and carvings you can see many pictures of mammoths with other animals. Pictures of killed mammoths have also been found with humans.

Mammoth Moutain Suite describes a bunch of hunters looking for mammoths. Imagine the majestic animals, what it felt like to see the herd in the mountains and what it sounded like when the 6 ton heavy and 3.5 meter tall mammoths were on the run.

MATTINATA - Trumpet/Cornet with piano accompaniment
Available £7.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, SOLOS - B♭. Cornet/Trumpet with Piano
Composer: Rugerro Leoncavallo
Arranger: Eric Wilson

There’s something about Italian vocal music that is well-suited to brass instruments; whether it is vibrant bravura writing or a soaring cantilena. Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Mattinata (Morning or Morning Serenade, to be more poetic) certainly soars and captures the sparkle of a bright new day. The lyrics (by the composer himself) are a greeting from a lover to his partner urging her to awaken and come to him – sunlight is missing without her!
The music is suitably bright and cheery, becoming slightly more grandiose toward the end. In arranging it for trumpet I wanted to provide players with something in D major that wasn’t a Baroque trumpet tune and featured lyrical yet agile lines.

The song has the distinction of being the first written especially for recording. That recording was made by the Gramophone and Typewriter Company (known today as HMV) in Milan Italy in 1903 and features the great Enrico Caruso accompanied by the composer at the piano. You can listen to it at https://archive.org/details/mattinata1903 although there are countless modern recordings to listen to as well. Some tempo markings are given in parenthesis and I’d urge players explore their own interpretation.

MEDITATION - Euphonium Solo & Piano Accompaniment
Available £7.95

Categories: SOLOS - Euphonium, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Frank Bridge
Arranger: Eric Wilson

Dating from the 1940s, British composer Frank Bridge’s Meditation is an effective balm for the soul. Its soothing, melancholy melody – rather Elgarian in style – flows serenely and perfectly suits the warm voice of the euphonium. Bridge’s love for expressive music is certainly apparent, with melodic ideas that sing over a rich harmonic accompaniment.

MONET at the EMBANKMENT - Parts & Score
Available £34.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, LIGHT CONCERT MUSIC
Composer: Paul McGhee

Duration 5.0

Monet on the Embankment was commissioned by Leigh Baker for Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band's performance at Brass in Concert 2014, where it received the prize for best new composition/arrangement.

Monet on the Embankment takes Claude Monet's Houses of Parliament collection as it's inspiration, a total of nineteen canvases, which were the same scene - all studies in changing landscapes.

While the Parliament series has Westminister Palace, it is so distorted by the fog and smog that it becomes secondary as the subject - as we see not just the effect of light on objects but also the effect of light on the atmosphere itself.

It is these distortions of light that the I have aimed to create in my piece, by using muted effects, various percussion instruments, extreme registers and dynamics as well as incorporating quarter-tones to further distort the harmonic picture.  Whilst looking to the past for inspiration through Mussorgsky's 'Promenade', the music most definitely looks to the future, aiming to place the setting for Monet's masterpiece's firmly in the present.

MOONRAKER - Parts & Score

Moonraker
Words by Hal David and Music by John Barry
Arranged for Brass Band by Christopher Wormald

Ever since the first Iames Bond films were released all over the world in the early 1960s, the theme songs which featured in the
opening title sequence of each film quickly became ever more iconic in terms of global recognition for the exclusive collection of
artists fortunate enough to have be chosen. The arrival of every new Iames Bond film has always generated huge media
speculation as to which solo vocalist or band would be selected by the film's producers to compose, sing or perform the latest
theme song. In recent years, such interest has only served to increase with every new Iames Bond film which has been released,
such is the popularity and fan base of the world's longest running film franchise which has continued to grow ever larger well into
the twenty first century. '

In 1977, the unexpected, global box office phenomenon of ”Star Wars" took the producers of the Iames Bond films, as with the makers of "Star Wars” themselves, completely by surprise. Such was the staggering financial success and the unexpected, rekindled global interest in everything to do with outer space that the Iames Bond producers immediately switched their planned and intended next film of "For Your Eyes Only” over to ”Moonraker” instead and, in so doing, also chose to return for a third and final time to engage the iconic Welsh singing star Shirley Bassey to record the film's theme song, following on from her massive hit
with ”Goldfinger” in 1964 and the subsequent "Diamonds Are Forever" in 1971.

Initially, the film ”Moonraker" divided opinion both critically and in terms of global, Iames Bond fan base reaction, but from a then, record production cost of $34 million to make, the box office returns in excess of $210 million established ”Moonraker" as the most lucrative and commercially successful of all the Iames Bond films ever made at that time, right through until "Goldeneye” in 1995. Legendary American lyricist Hal David was hired to collaborate with firmly established English James Bond composer John Barry to produce the title song of ”Moonraker” for Shirley Bassey to sing.
