The Love theme from Fantasy Overture ROMEO and JULIET.
PROGRAMME NOTE
This arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s famous love theme for flugel and euphonium was created especially for husband and wife Helen and Glyn Williams, and formed part of Cory Band’s winning 2018 Brass in Concert Programme.
The world premiere of the Russian composer’s take on W/illiam Shakespeare’s well- known story took place in 1870 and has since developed a reputation as a firm concert hall favourite all around the world.
Philip Harper has extracted just the love theme from what Tchaikovsky called his ‘fantasy overture’, adapting the presentation of the melody to fit the duet format,
and the performers might like to imagine that they are playing out the iconic balcony scene from Shakespeare’s play, with both protagonists beginning off-stage
left and right, and slowly being drawn towards each other as the piece progresses.
For 2 cornets or two euphoniums, or 2 Eb horns or 2 Eb bass - or any combination of same pitch instrument.

Lullaby is a beautiful euphonium duet with band accompaniment. The solo and contrapuntal writing, combined with a rich accompaniment from the band, offers peace and serenity.

Meditation is the central theme from The Triumph of Time, a work commissioned for The Black Dyke Band by Music Director Nicholas Childs.
The original brief was for a piece which would showcase the talents of the band's many fine soloists, among them Zoe Hancock on Flugel horn and Baritone soloist Katrina Marzella.
This extract brings both instruments together in an extended stand-alone arrangement.
Although scored for Flugel and Baritone, a number of options can be explored at the discretion of the conductor (eg. Flugel/Cornet and Euphonium/Trombone; two Bb Cornets etc. in which case cued lines in the Solo Horn and Soprano cornet parts may be played).
Written for Black Dyke's tour of Japan in 1990. Meiso ( which means contemplation) takes the unusual form of a duet for Eb. Horn and Bb. Baritone. The opening is based on two ideas : the upper brass depict the bells of the Shinto temple calling followers to gather for "meiso", and the lower brass play out a Shinto chant which was introduced to Peter Graham by a Japanese friend, Masaru Kawasaki. This work calls for long intertwined melodic lines from the soloists, covering the full instrumental range, while the band responds with soft, sustained and sympathetic playing throughout.
