The inspiration for this work is a part of South Wales where the composer spent his childhood. The Afan Forest Park is an old mining area that has been extensively reclaimed and transformed through one of the earliest reclamation schemes in Wales.
The forest is picturesque all year round, but is particularly beautiful at dawn in the summer when the moisture of the sea in Swansea Bay and the heat from the golden sun combines to create a unique mist.
The music seeks to capture the undulating effects of the changing density of the mist as the sun gradually burns away the moisture.
Mist of the Forest also forms the penultimate movement of the composer's extended work for brass band, Brass Triumphant - a work composed for the Cory Band during their 125th anniversary year of 2009.

‘Molly’ is a mix of several traditional Irish tunes “dished up” … one of Percy Grainger’s phrases for arranging … with his usual genius. The music leaps and dances with hyperactive energy, but above all sheer fun is what is on the menu. This piece is a delight.
The CD recording is called "PATRONS' CHOICE" featuring the Foden's Richardson Band conducted by Michael Fowles, and is available to purchase on this website in the CD section.

Monet on the Embankment was commissioned by Leigh Baker for Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band's performance at Brass in Concert 2014, where it received the prize for best new composition/arrangement.
Monet on the Embankment takes Claude Monet's Houses of Parliament collection as it's inspiration, a total of nineteen canvases, which were the same scene - all studies in changing landscapes.
While the Parliament series has Westminister Palace, it is so distorted by the fog and smog that it becomes secondary as the subject - as we see not just the effect of light on objects but also the effect of light on the atmosphere itself.
It is these distortions of light that the I have aimed to create in my piece, by using muted effects, various percussion instruments, extreme registers and dynamics as well as incorporating quarter-tones to further distort the harmonic picture. Whilst looking to the past for inspiration through Mussorgsky's 'Promenade', the music most definitely looks to the future, aiming to place the setting for Monet's masterpiece's firmly in the present.

Stephen Bulla is a former member of Monclair Citadel Band and gladly supplied Bandmaster Charles Baker with this fine march for a recording made by the band in 2001. The tune 'Onward Christian Soldiers' forms the bulk of the trio, first being tossed around in various registers and then, just the chorus, in the festive ending.

Monterosi is a village in the Italian province of Viterbo in the Lazio region. This work has been dedicated to the Accademia Musicale Francigena in Monterosi, to celebrate the occasion of the third "Tomasso Albani", a national competition for wind orchestras. The first performance of Monterosi was conducted by the composer, who had been invited for the third time to be a jury member and guest conductor. It is a solemn piece, with lyrical tendencies, which demonstrates the glorious, full sound of the band.
