Six jazz solos for Bb. Trumpet & Piano
Jazz in Time was designed for developing brass players looking for extra repertoire that is both fun to play and helpful in developing the skills required in jazz playing - those of good rhythmic awareness, stylish attention to detail and strong reading.
The piano parts are also intended to both be educational to the more Classically trained performer to teach jazz skills and to the typical busy brass teacher who hasn't quite honed advanced piano skills.
Each piece uses elements of harmonic progression from an established melody.

Logie o’Buchan is a well known North East of Scotland Ballad composed around 1736 by George Halket a well known Jacobite.
The song has been covered and recorded by many folk singers and musicians from all over the world. The Logie mentioned is situated in Crimond although there are many places called Logie in the North East.
The hero of the song was James Robertson who was the gardener at the Mansion of Logie in Crimond. It was also in Crimond where Jessie Seymour Irvine composed the melody to Psalm 23, The Lord’s My Shepherd, which is now known all over the world as Crimond. Crimond is also where as a child I spent many a happy summer holiday as my granda and granny ran the local shop and post office.
This arrangement for trumpet/cornet and piano takes the form of an air and variations.

Karl Jenkins composed this beautiful song for well-known singer Lesley Garrett (Soprano) using the famous poem by Irish poet W B Yeats, He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven.
This was subsequently arranged for Penclawdd Brass Band by its Music Director, Tony Small, to accompany soprano Ros Evans in the band's 40th Anniversary Concert (2013) in the presence of the band's President Sir Karl Jenkins.
Tony Small arranged a solo version for Bb Cornet which was first performed by Christopher Smith (Principal Cornet) in Penclawdd Band's Annual Concert of October, 2017. The band's former Principal Cornet, Gareth Small (Principal Trumpet of the famous Hallé Orchestra) gave the next performance with the Tredegar Band in January 2018 and it was subsequently recorded by the Flowers Band under the direction of David Childs and featuring cornetist Andrew Smith on the band's 50th Anniversary CD release - Celebrate!

A Letter Home was composed for Kirsty Abbotts and the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band for their opening set at the 2014 Brass in Concert Championships, held at the Sage Centre in Gateshead.
The music isn't the setting of the text, but is inspired by a select of the words of much cherished World War I poet, Siegfried Sassoon's poem of the same name.
