Slate, Sea and Sky features a musical landscape and journey in three integrated and continuous sections, led by the cornet soloist alongside ensembles broadly representing the title's elements: ‘slate’ (flugelhorn, tenor horns and trombones); ‘sea’ (baritones, euphoniums and basses) and ’sky’ (comets).
These alternate throughout with the full band, travelling towards and through a storm, and emerging into bright skies at the end.
The title Slate, Sea and Sky is inspired by Norman Bissell’s evocative poem of the same name, found in a book of poetry given to me by a close friend, to

Major Joy Webb’s contributions to The Salvation Army’s vocal repertoire have blessed and inspired both performers and listeners alike. Bandmaster Ivor Bosanko of the USA Western Territory has written this transcription of one of Major Webb’s most poignant compositions.
The melodic line lies comfortably for Cornet, and provides scope for much expression. Soloists not familiar with the lyrics would do well to refer to the original song, which can be found in The Musical Salvationist, July 1987.

Por una cabeza, literally translated as "by a head [of a horse]" in Spanish (meaning a horse winning a race by one head's distance), is one of the most famous and popular Argentine tangos.
Composer Carlos Gardel (11 December 1890 – 24 June 1935) was a singer, songwriter and actor, and is perhaps the most prominent figure in the history of tango. The music has appeared in numerous TV and Film soundtracks, perhaps most memorably in the famous dancing scene featuring Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman.
This extended arrangement for cornet (or trumpet) incorporates a cadenza and newly written interludes.
Extracts performed by the Brighouse and Rastrick Band, conductor David King. Full recording available on War of the Worlds - The Music of Peter Graham – available on this site.

A charming cornet solo written by Terry Camsey, former principal cornet with the International Staff Band, and featured by him on many occasions. Based on his own tune, Camsey has added a few tricks that will provide the soloist with a good test of lip flexibility.
In the You Tube performance provided here, Richard Marshall accompanied by the Black Dyke Band performs the cornet solo "Life's Pageant" by Terry Camsey at the New York Staff Band's 129th annual festival held on March 19, 2016 at the Centennial Memorial Temple in New York City.

This lively and melodic piece was commissioned by Maltby Colliery Band in 2000. It was written as a feature for solo cornet and the cornet section. For its first broadcast performance on Radio Scotland, from Edinburgh in 2009 Mark O’Keefe played the solo part with the band of CO-OP Glasgow. This piece makes an impressive encore or opening to a band concert and is also available in a version for brass dectet.

This solo was written for Philip Cobb and takes its inspiration from Virtuosity, a trumpet solo by Kenny Baker. The song Hand me down my silver trumpet is referred to in the two outer sections while the laid-back, jazzy central section features the song When the roll is called up yonder. The reason for including this song is the first line of the first verse which reads When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound.

This composition is a very challenging one for the soloist and requires the accompaniment to be subservient at all times. The soloist will find it helpful to, generally, adopt a very light and playful style. As a young aspiring cornet player, the composer was influenced by a number of soloists of that day, one being Del Staigers of the Goldman Band in the USA. Many of the musical motifs reflect that influence and it is hoped that this solo will, in turn, inspire the many aspiring cornet players of today.
