Each page in the first part of this book starts with a scale and its arpeggio. The rest of the page is full of tunes that use that scale and arpeggio.
As you play the tunes, you will find out why learning scales and arpeggios can help make you a better player. If you haven't guessed already, this is because most tunes are made up of little more than parts of scales and arpeggios

Introduction to the book : Welcome to Scoring & Arranging for Brass Band. Since the 1970’s there has been a worldwide explosion in the popularity of the British-style brass band. This has transformed what was once viewed by some as a parochial British working class institution into an internationally recognised brass ensemble.
As well as in the UK there are now British-style brass bands established in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, the USA, as well as in other countries. The modern brass band has an immense and ever growing repertoire of music. Amongst this are excellent original works by Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan-Williams, John Ireland and by many more modem composers. Most of the repertoire however consists of arrangements of music not originally written for brass band.
This book is designed as a guide for someone who wishes to begin scoring and arranging for brass band for the first time. From arranging a four part hymn tune to arranging more complex orchestral music the book offers step by step advice to help with many of the problems encountered by a new arranger and gives advice on the copyright law and publishing.
My experience as both a player and conductor in brass bands and as a professional orchestral player introduced me to a great deal of wonderful music which has shaped my own ideas on scoring and arranging. Having worked professionally as a brass band arranger for several years I have put these ideas and thoughts into this book.
I hope that you enjoy this book and Fmd its contents to be useful and informative, and I hope that you are encouraged to take your scoring and arranging for brass band further. Andrew Duncan. August 2005.
Section 3: the title indicates that the pieces in this book are written for three players from one instrumental section in an ensemble. They can be used in several ways. It could be an opportunity to direct the spotlight onto one section of the band (or orchestra) for example. There are also occasions when, rather than the entire ensemble, just a small group of players is needed. Another possibility is to play these pieces with fellow students, in class, at home, or in examinations.
With the music in Section 3 you will make an impression everywhere. The pieces are all in modern styles and accompanied by lively dance rhythms. You’ll find musical styles known in North America and Europe, like Dance, Trance, R&B, Trip Hop, but also music from warmer regions, such as Conga, Salsa and Samba — music for which we use the general term ‘Latin’.
The whole thing is even groovier when a drummer joins in — an extra percussion part is provided for this purpose. But if you lack a real drummer, you don’t have to do without the rhythm part as it is recorded on the CD. You can also listen to the demo version on the CD to get an impression of how the complete trios sound.
An important final point: the books from the Section 3 series cannot be combined with each other; you can only play from one book at a time. The third trumpet can be replaced by a trombone player who plays from the trumpet part (treble clef) or from the additional trombone part (bass clef).
Now is the time to bring three musicians together and start playing — Section 3 is fun to the power of three!
