Frederick Jewell was a prolific composer of music for the circus in the early 20th century, producing over 100 marches and screamers. He was leader of the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey, Hagenbeck-Wallace and Sells-Floto circus bands during his career. Circusdom is one of his most popular marches, skilfully arranged for brass band by Bert Van Thienen.
Citadel’s Destiny is a march that can be performed either in concert or on parade. It was commissioned by the Musique de l’Infanterie de Lille. A special feature is that it adheres to the conventional codes of military marches, albeit with a modern twist. The title refers to the citadel built by Vauban in Lille, “The Queen of Citadels”, with which the band shares a destiny. This march is still performed by the Infantry Band as part of their traditional concert repertoire.

The Civil Defence Association of Great Britain was formed as a support body for the Civil Defence Service and, whilst the Service had its own march, the Association did not - until recently. Sir Patrick Moore CBE FRS, astronomer, television personality extraordinaire, retired xylophonist, pianist and composer, was approached in the hope that he might provide a suitable march for the Civil Defence Association. Although now musically inactive through illness, he produced from his vast collection of marches written over a long period, the present one which he entitled, The Civil Defenders. Although originally scored for piano, Sir Patrick enlisted the help of his old friend and musical collaborator, Rodney Newton, who arranged versions for brass and wind bands.
The style is that of a traditional British road march and it should be played with all the panache and gusto which that implies. Duration c. 4.30
A great march, dedicated to the memory of those who worked at Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes, England, in World War 2. They were under the brilliant leadership of Alan Turing and were responsible for breaking the secret military codes used by the Enemy Forces (German in particular). The composer, Len Jenkins, lives close to Bletchley Park, went to school even closer, and attended Training Courses actually in 'The Park'. The march has memorable themes and is toe tapping for the audience.
