A 'timeless' cornet solo from the pen of Eric Ball, utilising the charming, lyrical melody of the same name. Its traditional theme and variation construction and its relative popularity should not lull the soloist into believing it to be easy - for soloist or band.

Bb. Cornet solo - duration 2.57
This melody is reputed to have originated in Caernarvonshire, North Wales. Tradition holds that a bard called David, lying on his deathbed, called for his harp and performed this plaintive tune, expressing a desire that it should be played at his funeral. Ever since the tune has been called by his name and that of his house 'Garagwen' ('Druid Stone' or 'White Rock'). The solo is not just a slow melody with brass band accompaniment but is a composite whole, the band needing as much sensitivity as the soloist in the presentation.

The text for this traditional Irish melody (Slane) is an Irish poem dating from about the eighth century The literal translation first appeared in Miss Bryne s Erin, Volume II, Dublin, 1905 The melody first appeared in publication in Patrick W Joyce’s Old Irish Folk Music and Songs, Dublin, 1909.
The song is filled with various references for God The word vision is used to indicate not only what we focus on but also what we strive for As we strive for a goal we gain a long-range perspective that helps us see today’s disappointments as trivial when compared to the heavenly vision.
Be thou my vision, 0 Lord of my heart; Nought be all else to me, save that thou art- Thou my best thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. High King of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heaven’s joys, 0 bright heaven’s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, 0 Ruler of all.
This simple setting, originally for trumpet or flugel horn and piano, is part of a collection of ten hymns entitled, Great Hymns, which is part of an ongoing publicati9n specifically written or arranged for Philip Smith, Principal Trumpet, New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
