Jan de Haan drew inspiration for this work from five paintings exhibited in The Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, one of the largest and most versatile museums in the world. He used the melodious Andante cantabile from the String Quartet Op. 11 by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as its starting point. Thus, he created his own musical painting, which is just as varied as the underlying canvases – from Cheerful Company by Dirck Hals to Dance II by Henri Matisse. A true work of art!

Heroes

Heroes for unaccompanied solo trumpet was composed in April 2020 and is dedicated to all our NHS workers. During this pandemic many of our NHS workers have paid the ultimate sacrifice whilst looking after and caring for us. Their sacrifice must never be forgotten.

The piece starts off as a type of fanfare but right away there is a kind of leitmotif of two low quaver Gs which represent heartbeats. Sometimes they are strong and other times weak but they are always there just like our NHS workers. After the initial statement there is a more legato section which takes as it’s premise the notes of the fanfare. An accelerando leads into a Scherzo when the technique and range of the performer is tested with fast tonguing and cascading semiquavers. A rallentando brings us to a recapitulation of the main theme and the piece ends with the heartbeat low Gs signalling hope over adversity.

"Ca' the yowes to the knowes" ("Drive the ewes to the hills") is a Scottish folk song collected by Robert Burns from 1794. Although sometimes attributed to Burns himself, the seven-stanza original poem is thought to be the work of Ayrshire poet Isabel Pagan, a contemporary of Burns. The poem was partially revised by Burns, and he added an eighth stanza. Burns later re-wrote the poem on a solitary stroll in the country, and this second version consists of six stanzas.It is possible that Burns was not aware that Pagan was the original author, only noting that "this song is in the true Scottish taste, yet I do not know that either air or words were ever in print before."

The original text is a pastoral love poem spoken from the point of view of a shepherdess herding her ewes ("yowes"), who has a romantic meeting with a shepherd lad. Burns's revised version is less explicit about the identity of the narrator, but follows a similar theme of love amid the beauty of nature. Both versions include the refrain, "Ca' the yowes to the knowes".

In the film, the shy teenager, Birk, must convince his father and the rest of the village that he can become a real Viking warrior and fight the dragons.

The original music was written by John James Powell and describes both tension, drama and romance that unfolds along the way.

"I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside" is a popular British music hall song. It was written in 1907 by John A. Glover-Kind and made famous by music hall singer Mark Sheridan who first recorded it in 1909. It speaks of the singer's love for the seaside, and his wish to return there for his summer holidays each year. It was composed at a time when the yearly visits of the British working-class to the seaside were booming.

It was, for a long time, used as a signature tune by Reginald Dixon MBE, who was the resident organist at the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool between 1930-70.
