The River Alladale provides the inspiration for this lyrical piece which has a lilting melody with an unmistakeable Scottish feel. The trio of Flugel Horn, Tenor Horn and Baritone provide a wonderful sense of flowing with the river which, as the piece progresses, broadens and grows stronger as it nears the outlet to the sea by the Summer Isles. Bring a touch of Scots magic to your concert with this delightful piece.
You can buy the full recording of this work on the CD section of our site.
The recording is "HYMN of the HIGHLANDS" on Polyphonic QRL 214D
HYMN of the HIGHLANDS was commissioned by David King and the Yorkshire Building Society Band for first performance at the 2002 European Brass Band Championships Gala Concert in Brussels.
The complete suite lasts approximately 36 minutes. however it is possible to construct pieces of different lengths in order to feature particular soloists or fit different programming constraints, and to this end most of the movements are published separately. The only exceptions to this are the first and last movements which are published together (with Alladale) as "Suite from Hymn of the Highlands".

John Blanken has created a swinging arrangement of the famous Scottish traditional tune Scotland the Brave. The usual version with bagpipes is the best known and there is a similarity in Swingin’ Kilts owing to its long, drone-like tones in the accompaniment. The theme has been rhythmically adapted but it is still easily recognisable.
Swingin’ Kilts holds a challenge for every brass band. It makes demands in terms of timing and technique which give this work the bravura feel that will keep the audience as well as the musicians swinging in their seats.

Three contrasting movements dedicated to Sir Dean Goffin, and is modeled after his Rhapsody in Brass.
Normally £87.00 - only £79.95 in our SALE - limited stock.
This music was commissioned by Southwestern Michigan College (Jonathan Korzun Director of Bands) honoring the thirtieth anniversary of the college’s first graduating class.
In three distinct movements, the work is dedicated to the late Sir Dean Coffin and is modeled after the overall structure of his Rhapsody In Brass. The music develops from and mirrors the earlier work, but with more modern tonal outlines and original melodic material.
The first movement opens with several fanfare-like figures, which recurs at various times in different instrumental combinations. With development, this music takes on a carnival-like atmosphere before concluding with an upward flourish.
Following a solitary sustained note, the second movement commences quietly with a slower theme shared by several solo instruments. The music here develops intb an extended study on The Water is Wide - an American title for a folk song which seems to have its beginnings in the United Kingdom as 0 Wa!ey, Waley.
The third movement reverts to the rhapsodic format with a lively theme marked ‘in a playful manner’. As a reference to Coffin’s roots, the music incorporates a happy Maori (native New Zealand) melody known as Shout the Sound. Following the majestic recapitulation of the movement’s opening, the entire work is brought to a close with a showcase of exciting ensemble techniques.

Symphonic Contrasts is an original composition in three harmoniously connected movements. The fi rst movement opens with a brilliant introduction and presents two themes that are developed simultaneously and become intermingled. The second movement is at a slower tempo and gives several soloists the opportunity to showcase their expressive skills. The last movement begins with a musical dialogue between timpani, bongos and cymbals. Symphonic Contrasts has been selected as the set piece (2nd section - Brass Band) for the 2010 Lucerne Cantonal Band Music Festival Competition in Willisau (Switzerland).
