This most beautiful piece from Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly has been wonderfully arranged fora brass band of any standard to perform to perfection. Simple and well structured, whether it is performed to a full concert hall, or on a bandstand in the park, audiences everywhere will appreciate this lovely piece.

Included at the last minute in a performance of Faust conducted by the composer in Budapest, The Hungarian March caused a sensation in the politically charged atmosphere of the Hungary of the time. It was encored time and time again. The clever build-up to a stunning climax shows the professional composer scoring a bull's-eye. In fact the opera has nothing whatsoever to do with Hungary : Berlioz' placing the scene 'on a plain in Hungary' was the merest cover up for trying to be sure of a triumph in his concert-tour in that country. Success on the cheap ! In the right circumstances artistic integrity is (a little) negotiable.

Known for his melodic themes, this Hungarian Polka (Eljen a Magyar) from Johann Strauss is one of his lesser known works. Fast and furious, a great way to start (or finish!) a concert.

Several items were written for the 1976 tour to America by the Cory Band and the Grimethorpe Band. The trip was part of American celebrations marking the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence. The tour was significantly backed financially by the American mining unions; hence the pairing of Britain’s finest mining bands.
American Dream, David of the White Rock, Hunt the Hare and Greensleeves were all generated for this tour. Interestingly Hunt the Hare, which features a Welsh tune by the same name and an English tune, A Hunting We Will Go, was never actually performed in America because of an industrial dispute and until recently, the score and parts were lost. We believe this is the premiere recording of the work.
