Keeping one's customers happy was a significant part of the composer's job in the past and the legend that Handel composed the Water Music to restore himself in George 1st's eyes may not be true to the letter, but is perfectly reasonable in the spirit of the times. Played from a barge on the Thames by 50 musicians, George (the King) was so taken with his namesake's music that apparently he demanded (and of course received) three performances of everything, which adds up to a lot of music. The Suite I have chosen is a selection of mostly well-known numbers, but with a few gems not often played.

Sir Walter Scott’s novels were all the rage in Paris in the 1830s and 40s. The immediate success of Waverley was phenomenal and established Scott as a novelist with an international reputation. In his score Berlioz quotes from the novel itself : "Dreams of love and Lady’s charms, Give place to honour and to arms". Set in the times of the 1745 Scots' rebellion, the slow, romantic introduction is followed by an Allegro, full of vigour and youthful spirit.

Written to a commission from the Riddings Band, a noble pair of windmills... named 'Sarah and James' after the owner and his wife... were a notable landmark until burned down in suspicious circumstances and later demolished. Nothing more descriptive than rather circular musical motives connect these with the music, which is very much a lively concert overture.

Sarasate's famous Violin showpiece, a selection of gypsy songs and tunes, has been unsurprisingly widely adapted. Successively emotional, even tearful, then wildly energetic and spirited, what more could the extravert soloist ask ?
