Symphonic Variants for Brass Band & Percussion.

Composer’s Score Notes :
Doctor Robert Childs and the Buy as You View Band commissioned this music to be premiered in the Own Choice Section of the 2006 European Brass Band Championships held at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, where the band was the Welsh representative. Their performance drew great praise from the audience, and more importantly perhaps from the adjudicators, who awarded the band first place.

The work is in one continuous movement although it can be viewed as being in a five-sectioned arch, with the first, third and fifth sections providing the quick music, and the second and fourth the slow. The title comes from one of the two main sources for the music, the Welsh hymn Guide met, 0 Thou Great Redeemer, which describes the journey of the Christian soul, through many tribulations, to its final destination-The Promised Land The strong, memorable tune to which it is wedded is Cwm Rhondda, written by John Hughes, and this provides the material for much of the quick music. The other source, heavily influencing the slow music, is the lovely Welsh love-song, Myfanwy, by Joseph Parry, with its unforgettable falling sixth intervals near the end.

The work is not a conscious piece of programme music in spite of these associations. In abstract terms it is well described in its sub-title: Symphonic Variants for Brass and Percussion. I am well aware however that music is appreciated at different levels. As a language it is much less precise than that of words and as a consequence its meaning or message is less confined, less explicit. It is, perhaps, unwise to be dogmatic about precise meanings in music. For composers, I guess that the subconscious is often quite busy during the creative process, so that things are never quite as clinical as one would think!

The piece was written for the Melbourne Staff Band’s visit to the 1978 Salvation Army International Congress which was held in London, England. The music expresses the quintessence of Australian Salvationism:

The opening consists of an original theme, which seeks to convey the immensity of the Australian continent.

The second section, beginning at bar 31, is based on the tune Advance Australia Fair. The first line of the words associated with the tune is ‘Australians all let us rejoice’ and this part of the music is exploring the character of the Australian people.
The theme Glory, glory, glory, hallelujah! from the song The Christian Mission is featured beginning at bar 42. It is followed by variations symbolising the fragmentary growth of the Christian Mission (which later became The Salvation Army) from its commencement in the city by two individuals (bar 52) and its spread through the countryside to the outback (bar 91). The outback is also depicted by The sheepshearer ‘s song which is known to us as the tune Ring the bell, watchman. The variations of this section culminate in the illustration of the nation-wide establishment of The Salvation Army.

A meditative setting of the chorus At thy feet I bow adoring begins at bar 151. The tune, which was written by two Australians, is used to portray the combination of the three former elements in humble adoration of their Creator.
The fmal section (at bar 181) is a development of the previous themes bringing the work to its climactic conclusion.

Comments by Richard Phillips
Reflections in nature is a musical portrayal of the words by the late Colonel Catherine Baird, the verses of which are reproduced here:

When Jesus looked o’er Galilee,
So blue and calm and faii
Upon her bosom, could he see
A cross reflected there?

When sunrise dyed the lovely deeps,
And sparkled in his hair,
0 did the light rays seem to say:
A crown of thorns he ‘II wear?

When in the hush of eventide,
Cool waters touched his feet,
Was it a hymn of Calvary’s road
He heard the waves repeat?

But when the winds triumphantly
Swept from the open plain,
The Master surely heard the song:
The Lord shall live again!

Colonel Robert Redhead has used the tune Fewster to portray three pictures of the crucifixion and a final triumphant picture of the resurrection of Jesus. Little technical comment is needed as the score is marked with any dynamic or tempi variation. It is important that the melody be heard clearly at all times and that the sound be sustained to the bar lines. Beginning at the interlude between the first two settings of the tune, the syncopated motif heard in the trombones and subsequently in the horns, baritones and euphonium should be sostenuto and lyrical. Through section D, ensure that, despite the increased volume, the character of the hymn tune remains constant to the end.
