Mozart is one of my favourite composers and his Rondo Alla Turk has been a popular concert piece for many performers the world over. This is an arrangement I have done for solo xylophone that shows off the technical dexterity of both the piece and the instrument.

Section: 3+
Rondo Alla Turk has been a popular concert piece for many performers the world over. This is an arrangement I have done for solo xylophone that shows off the technical dexterity of both the piece and the instrument. Starting in a brisk tempo, the soloist performs the main themes of the piece with the major key fanfare-like interludes introducing each new section.
The main melody from the opening returns with an even brighter tempo that takes the soloist into a flamboyant cadenza section. The cadenza section is scored out for the xylophone but the ad-lib marking allows the soloist in true Mozart fashion to improvise (if they wish) the cadenza section which leads into the finale.
The finale brings back the major key motifs from the opening to a coda section that concludes in a breathless flurry from the soloist.

The beautiful lilting melody of Scarborough Fair has been expertly woven through contrasting sections of this piece, and unlike most percussion solos there is a chance for the performer to demonstrate their slow lyrical playing as well as their technical wizardry.
Scarborough Fair was premiered in the gala concert at the 2014 German Brass Band Championship, with the composer as the soloist accompanied by the Black Dyke Band.
The solo can be played on either xylophone, marimba or both and requires good technique and stamina in both four and two mallet disciplines.

This solo for xylophone and brass band was written for Dave Danford and is a tribute to the late Teddy Brown who was a popular variety artist of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Brown was well-known for his relaxed, whimsical manner and this music attempts to capture the character of his playing.

Howard Snell writes :
Used by Channel 5 TV, this arrangement has proved very popular. One of Felix Mendelssohn's Songs without Words it manages to be charming and brillliant at the same time. Re-arranged from the version with brass band. A virtuoso arrangement of this song without words arranged as a Xylophone solo.

This piece was written for the Welsh percussionist Leslie Lewis. Born in the Rhondda Valley, Lewis became a pupil of the legendary Ernest Parsons, timpanist and founder member of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, a member of the instrument manufacturing family of E.A. Parsons & Company and an internationally-renowned authority on timpani and percussion. Lewis joined Parsons in the CBSO, becoming principal percussionist and later he was appointed solo percussionist with the BBC Theatre Orchestra in London. Sadly, the very morning he was to take up his new appointment, he stepped off the Birmingham train at Euston station, suffered a heart attack and died there and then on the platform - a tragic end to a promising career.
