A humorous quick Chinese galop in 2/4 time.
A rip roaring dance in two four time that will blow away the cobwebs from the furthest corners of your practice hall. This Galop, described by Johan Strauss as a Chinese Galop that should be played as fast as possible, will make an ideal humourous closing piece or encore item for any concert.

'The Garland Waltz' comes from 'The Sleeping Beauty', the second of three ballets by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Sleeping Beauty’s theme is simplistic and focuses on the conflicting forces of good and evil through the characters the Lilac Fairy (good) and Carabosse (evil).
The ballet's premiere in 1890 received more favorable accolades than 'Swan Lake' but Tchaikovsky never witnessed the works true success outside of Russia as he died in 1893. By 1903, 'The Sleeping Beauty' was the second most popular ballet in the repertoire of the Imperial Ballet, having been performed 200 times in only 10 years.
The waltz and other music from the ballet has been used extensively on film and television, most notably on Disneys animated version of 'Sleeping Beauty' and the recently released 'Maleficent'.

Dusk is drawn and the Green Man’s thorn is wreathed in rings of fog, Siabra sails his boat till morn, upon the starry bog. A leanbhan O, the pale moon hath brimmed her cusp in dew, And weeps to hear the sad sleep-tune, I sing O love of you. - The Gartan Mothers Lullaby
A lovely Irish melody from Co. Donegal; the lullaby of a mother to her child. The song refers to a number of figures in Irish mythology, places in Ireland and words in the Irish language.
The best known recording of the song was made by Meryl Streep in 2000.

This concert opener was written for the Canadian Staff Band and its European tour, culminating in its attendance of the ISB120 event in London in June 2011. The tour included some time in Holland and, appropriately, the well-known Dutch hymn 'We gather together' was selected as the source material for this work. The melody is used in a couple of different settings before reaching a rousing conclusion.
