The idea behind this arrangement is for “Show Me The Way To Go Home” to be used as the first encore at the end of a concert.
The band stand to acknowledge the applause from the audience then proceed to leave the stage ignoring any requests for encores, gesturing to each other and the audience that it is time to go.
The trombone section hesitate and eventually they are left on stage alone. After a brief discussion they “tune up” and begin the piece. Other players then reluctantly return to the stage and join in.
The conductor should return to bring the band in at the pickup to letter D.
The final three players should then come on — 2nd Bb Bass, cymbal player and finally the soprano cornet player who should sit down just before the final pause.
