The driving rhythms and lush harmonies of funk music is a perfect vehicle for the tight, dynamic playing of a solid brass band. The brass sections of Tower of Power and Earth, Wind and Fire inspired players from the 1980s onwards and being part of this type of rhythmic force is a great experience. This piece is designed to be rewarding for all the performers and of course the most important group; the audience.

Funk Engine was commissioned for the Intermediate Section of the 2016 National Youth Brass Band Championships.
When I was commissioned to write a piece for the championships I decided that I wanted to create something a bit different to standard brass band repertoire. I decided that the best way to do this was to go a bit out of my comfort zone and explore some styles of music that I have yet to experiment with.
I have always been a great lover of Jazz, Funk and Big Band music and the sounds associated with them. In Funk Engine I have tried to capture some of these sounds, however, I am a brass-bander at heart and as such I've tried to create a fusion of styles that hopefully combines the best of brass band and jazz into one piece.
Great entertainment piece which your band and audience will enjoy alike. Including a catchy bass riff, lush harmonies, great solo lines and a busy percussion section - this piece is really funky !
This work was one of twelve works commissioned by the Scottish Brass Band Association and Funded by Creative Scotland Targeted Fund - 2021
to aid Covid Recovery and support composers in Scotland.
Four eminent Scottish composers were each commissioned to write three works - all at different levels of difficulty and styles.

Austrian composer Johann Strauss II (1825 - 1899), is well known for his prodigious output of waltzes, polkas and operettas. He was also a notable violinist and conductor, and made many tours, particularly to London and the USA. He was the son of Johann Strauss I, and collaborated in a few works with his brother, Josef. Furioso Polka is perhaps one of his lesser-known compositions, but it is certainly one of the most exciting. It was composed in 1862, while Strauss lived in Vienna.
