The chorale which forms the basis of this prelude dates from the sixteenth century and was used by J.S.Bach in his Cantata No.122, 'Das neugeborne Kinderlein'. On his score Bruce Broughton includes a translation by R. Rutledge of the words; 'There comes the true jubilee, what are we eternally lamenting? Look alive! It is a time for singing, for the Christ-child exorcises all sorrow'.

Excerpts from...

For three years the Czech composer Dvorak lived and worked in America and this, his ninth and last symphony, contains impressions of that continent. This arrangement for brass band follows the scheme of the original in movement order and theme presentation although a certain amount of 'condensing' of material has naturally been inevitable.

Composer: Dudley Bright

Commissioned by the Swiss Christian Brass Band Association in celebration of their 150th anniversary, the title 'Paean' means a shout of thanksgiving and praise. It is also the composer's personal expression of gratitude to God following major surgery. Although 'Paean' includes three fairly contemporary Christian songs, it is not intended to be played in any kind of rock or jazz style. The idiom is quite firmly rooted in brass band tradition. The opening fanfare-like section begins in celebratory mood before becoming more contemplative through the song 'Father God, I wonder'. A change of tempo heralds the statement of the thematically significant song 'Hosanna' before immediately moving to 'Faithful God'. Following a fugato the music retraces its steps to a triumphant restatement of the opening music.

This symphony for brass band seeks to explore the thought that 'the greatest need of any congregation is its pastor's personal holiness'. The first movement challenges the pastor 'to serve the present age', the tunes 'Majesty' and 'Lathbury' are used. The second movement expresses a priority to 'Seek...first the Kingdom of God'. The short third movement presents the question 'Except I am moved with compassion, how dwellest they Spirit in me?' before the triumphant finale reflects the desire of every Christian that his life and work will always be for the glory of God with the presentation of 'In my life Lord, be glorified'.

Salvation Army suite

Attempting to recreate the atmosphere of mediaeval pilgrims, this suite comprises three separate, yet linked movements. I. Based on John Bunyan's poem 'He Who Would Valiant Be', the music reminds us of the words 'No foes shall stay his might, though he with giants fight, he will make good his right to be a pilgrim'. II. A transcription of the composer's own setting of 'God be in my head'. III. The original themes in this movement express feelings of joy and excitement of present day pilgrims journeying on the Christian path.

Salvation Army festival march. Duration 4.31

With this effort, Deputy-Bandmaster Wilfred Heaton, of Sheffield Park Corps, made his debut in the Festival Series Band Journal. At the outset it should be made clear that this is no ordinary march, and it will need quite a different approach from that of the usual type of music written in that form.

Introduction - A clean use of the tongue and a strict observance of the dynamic markings are essential in this short but trumpet-like figure for Comets and Trombones. The semiquaver anacrusis may cause a little trouble at first, but a clear indication by the conductor will soon correct matters. Bar four, where the Basses enter on the third beat with an imitation figure, will also need to be watched.

Section A - The melodic outline is a little broken, 1st Comet and Flugel Horn having the melody for the first two bars. See that the upward scalic figure, where the Solo Comets join, is correctly timed. All that is necessary for the accompaniment is a steady tread with good rhythm.

Section B - Much of the music here resembles an interlude rather than a second subject and several unusual features are seen. The first is the imitation figure for Baritones and Euphonium which will need careful handling. Bar seven, however, is the most unusual feature and may present a problem to many, but this will solve itself if taken slowly at first in practice, increasing the speed when quite sure of it. The bar which follows is difficult only for Solo Comet, but even this is scalic and will quickly become easy to negotiate.

Section C - This resembles the first subject, and is on similar lines, but possesses new features, Tenor Trombones and Euphonium having the melody previously played by the 1st Comet and Flugel Horn. Imitation figures for Trombone and Cornet are prominent features from bar five onwards. The Horn and Euphonium link in the last bar is also important.

Section B - Novel and interesting treatment is given to a Salvation Army ‘old favourite’ theme, the words of which are:
Praise, oh praise Him!
Swell the song that’s rung throughout the ages;
Praise, oh praise Him!
The Lamb once slain!
Oh, sing the grand old song again,
How the precious flow washes white as snow!
Oh, sing the grand old song again,
Of the fountain that was opened at the cross.

Composer: Andrew MacKereth

Written for the 2003 tour of Canada and USA by Bristol Easton Band of The Salvation Army, this set of variations provides the whole band with a stern examination of technical and musical aptitude, whilst engaging the listener from beginning to end. The commission given to the composer was to create a set of variations with a similar framework to that of Edward Gregson's 'Variations on Laudate Dominum'. As in the famous Gregson work, the theme (Lobe den Herren) is not heard in its entirety until the final section when the majestic tune provides a fitting and stirring conclusion to the music.

Wilfred Heaton's march 'Praise' has long been a favourite of Kenneth Downie. In 'Praise Tribute', written for The International Staff Band, he deliberately adopts a Heaton style and follows the key scheme of the original while developing the music from the old Manx revival hymn 'The Good Old Way'.
