Several items were written for the 1976 tour to America by the Cory Band and the Grimethorpe Band. The trip was part of American celebrations marking the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence.
The tour was significantly backed financially by the American mining unions; hence the pairing of Britain’s finest mining bands.
American Dream, David of the White Rock, Hunt the Hare and Greensleeves were all generated for this tour.

Fievel Goes West
For the first time ever, the music from Steven Spielberg’s animated story has been arranged into a full suite for brass band. With hits like “Somewhere Out There”, “Dreams to Dream” and “Way Out West’ all included in the suite, the music of James Homer can set emotions rolling, there is something for everyone to enjoy. With the whole concert suite lasting around 10 minutes, there are optional cuts written when if played, can cut the suite down to 6 minutes, as well as cutting out some difficult parts for lower section bands. With Wild West themes and train journey rides (and lets not forget the spoken lyrics!), this really is musical entertainment at its best.
Written for the Cory Band to conclude their performance at Brass in Concert 2008, An American Tale is a musical tribute to the American Civil war.
The work includes : The Battle Hymn of the Republic, The Girl I Left Behind, Kingdom Come, Yankee Doodle Dandy, The Soldiers Return, Turkey in the Straw and concludes with Amazing Grace, a song synonymous with slavery and selected to conclude the work as a reflection of the war’s primary goal. Each of the songs is scored in a psuedo-compositional style of an American composer including; John Philip Sousa, Aaron Copland, Charles Ives and Leonard Bernstein. The American Civil War (1861—1865)
Following his presidential election in 1860, Abraham Lincoln began a campaign against the expansion of slavery beyond the American states in which it already existed. Even before the republican victory in that election, seven of the southern states, led by Jefferson Davis, declared their secession from the government (the Union) and formed the Confederate States of America (The Confederacy). Both the incoming and outgoing US administrations rejected the secession, regarding it as rebellion. Hostilities began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces attacked a U.S. military installation at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. Lincoln responded by calling for a volunteer army from each state. This led to four more southern slave states seceding. In September 1862, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation made the end of slavery in the South the main aim of the war, and dissuaded the British from intervening. The war is the deadliest in American history and caused in the region of 700,000 soldier deaths and an undetermined number of civilian casualties. The war also achieved its goal, ended slavery, restored the Union and strengthened the role of the federal government. The social, political, economic and racial issues of the war decisively shaped the reconstruction era which continues into the 21st century.

'An Evening Prayer' is from Act II of Humperdink's fairy opera Hänsel and Gretel. The libretto, written by Humperdinck's sister Adelheid Wette, is based on the Grimms' Hänsel and Gretel. The scene is set in a scary forest at night and Hansel and Gretel are frightened. A caring sandman comforts and reassures them. He tells them that fourteen angels will protect them until morning. This arrangement was made for Brass Band Aid and recorded by the Buy As You View Band on the compilation CD Brass Band Aid - Into Africa (DOYCD226).

The composer writes, "Analyse and Interpret was originally written in 2006 as a sister piece to Waiting For a Pain Hit!??!!? Along with ‘Pain Hit’ it was my first composition since graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
The piece remained un-played until 2013, when several Euphonium players asked me if I had an un-accompanied work they could use. After a major re- working the piece, in it’s current form, was premiered by James McLeod at the RWCMD.
Analyse and Interpret is written without bar-lines and without any performance directions - the aim for this being to give as much musical freedom to the performer as possible. Indeed, the title gives a concise explanation for my hopes for the piece - study it and make it your own! There is no right or wrong, only self-expression.”
