Howard Snell writes :
Rossini 'retired' from opera aged 40, to indulge the full pleasures of the Parisian table (you've seen pictures of him) and to compose equally tasty, but lighter morsels for private concerts. These seven musical dishes are delicious, but often very surprising. For example, 'A Caress for My Wife' develops into a fullscale domestic row along the way, while the love 'Duet for Two Cats' is worthy of 'Tristan'. In fact I have inserted a bar of the latter into the arrangement, if only because Rossini and Wagner did not like each other: Wagner didn't like anyone else who was successful and Rossini didn't like pompous bores !

Howard Snell writes :
Used by Channel 5 TV, this arrangement has proved very popular. One of Felix Mendelssohn's Songs without Words it manages to be charming and brillliant at the same time. Re-arranged from the version with brass band. A virtuoso arrangement of this song without words arranged as a Xylophone solo.

One of most affecting of all spirituals, in this arrangement of Steal Away we hear a simple offstage choir of cornets offering a glimpse of a better world hereafter.

The Breton legend of Ys, and the occasional rising of its cathedral from the waves, gave rise to one of Debussy's most graphic musical impressions. All of the composer's genius for picture painting is used in depicting the watery scene, the majesty of the cathedral rising and then sinking back under the sea.

Some pieces of music never stray out of fashion. The Swan still glides past as serenely as when he first glided past in 1886, in Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals.

Howard Snell writes :
William Boyce, organist at St. Paul's Cathedral, was one of Handel's contemporaries and largely overshadowed by the great man. Boyce composed in generally smaller forms of music. His batch of 12 Symphonies, short and sweet compared to the modern form, are of unmissable charm and liveliness.

A melody that sways and moves in a most seductive fashion. The unique sound of a cornet group intertwining around the melody expresses the atmosphere of the tune perfectly.

Rossini's famous tarantella from The Barber of Seville this is NOT. Taken from 'Sins of My Old Age' this is an 'Aristocratic Tarantella' according to the composer. It is a very high-spirited virtuoso caper, somewhat shortened from the original. (THAT can be found as the Finale in 'Musical Evenings' by Rossini in the Symphonic Brass catalogue.)

No.4 of Four Sacred Pieces for Brass Band & Choir.
Verdi's Four Sacred Pieces are truly masterpieces. This particular arrangement of N°4 was made for the Leicester Philharmonic Choir and premièred with them by Howard Snell with the Desford Band in the 1980s. Extraordinarily suited to the sonorities of the brass band, the Te Deum requires a fine choir to do it justice. The material contains only the band parts.
