A Troika? Tidy!, is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms.
A Troika? Tidy!, which would normally form the fourth movement of the concerto, begins with menace before the soloist has the opportunity exploit phenomenal technique. With a beautiful change of gear towards the end, a rapturous interlude is ushered in leading to a brief cadenza with staggering pyrotechnics in a varity of cross-rhythms conducted over the incessant chug of sleigh-bells.
On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. David is a wonderful musician of the highest quality and it was a joy and, indeed, a challenge, to write a work for both him and an instrument of such beauty and agility."
A Troika? Tidy! for euphonium and brass band recieved its premiere on November 29th 2009 in Swansea's Brangwyn Hall performed by David Childs and the Cory Band conducted by Dr. Robert Childs, and can be heard on Doyen CD262 Moto Perpetuo.
Other individual movements and the complete Concerto for Euphonium with brass band accompniament are vailable from Prima Vista Musikk. Orchestral and wind band versions are available from Boosey and Hawkes.

"Over the Stone".
Tros y Garreg meaning ‘Over the Stone’ is a traditional Welsh song. The sentiment of the song is attributed to Rhys Bodychen, who led a troop of Welsh forces at the Battle of Bosworth Field where Richard III was defeated by Henry Tudor in 1485. The English lyrics are by John Oxenford:
Over the stone, the old gray stone, Let me ponder here alone, Through all weather we go together Ancient stone, thou good old stone. Of the many friends I’ve seen, Thou the truest friend has been, Some forget me, some have fled, Some are false, and some are dead, Changing never constant ever, Still I find thee, dear old stone.
Standing here, thou silent stone, What a world thou must have known! Deeds of glory, lost to story, Hast thou witnessd ancient stone. Here beneath the grass, ‘tis said, Many warriors bones are laid, Fighting for their land they fell, None but thou can truly tell. Secrets keeping, ever sleeping, Dream’st thou of the past old stone?
This skillful arrangement by Welshman Tony Small was composed for David Childs and the Cory Band and can be heard on the Doyen CD214 ‘CELTIC CHARM’ Available for purchase on this site. Duration c. 5’30”

Twm Siôn Cati is a figure in Welsh folklore often described as the Welsh Robin Hood. The hills and valleys around Tregaron were once the playing fields of Twm, highwayman, thief and prankster, whose exploits were legendary throughout South Wales. A handsome man of many faces, he could swap between the fine robes of a gentleman and the rags of a peasant to suit his mischievous deeds. This new composition by Rodney Newton depicts Twm being pursued on horseback having taken from the rich before giving to the poor!
Twm Siôn Cati is dedicated to David Childs and it can be heard on the CD Celtic Charm (DOYCD214) on which the performers are David Childs and Cory Band.
