Composed for, and dedicated to, Owen Farr, this single movement work for tenor horn is divided into clearly defined sections. The introduction consists of a fanfare figure which is taken up by the soloist and turned into a cheerful melody. This is developed and varied during the progress of the first section, culminating in a climax. The pace later slackens and a new theme emerges, which grows out of the opening fanfare figure. This is then taken up by the accompaniment and shared with the soloist. A return to the faster music brings a new set of variants on the original theme, which builds to a broad statement of the middle section theme. A recapitulation of the primary material is rounded off by an energetic coda, also based on earlier material.
Tenor Toccata is also available with piano accompaniment as part of Prima Vista Musikk's Owen Farr Solo Series.

"By Trevone Bay" was composed for Flugel Soloist Zoe Hancock and the Black Dyke Band to celebrate both their Double Champion Victory at the British Open and National Championships 2014 and Zoe’s unique achievement in winning the Best Soloist Award in both contests - an accomplishment never done before. Section: 4+
The world premier was performed by Zoe and the band at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on February 8th 2015.
‘By Trevone Bay’ is a lovely lyrical slow melody that utilises the full range and colour of the flugel horn. Starting with an atmospheric opening the soloist performs the main theme, which repeats with more colour in the accompanying parts and solo line. After introducing a second theme from the ensemble, the solo cornets perform the main melody with the soloist enjoying a lyrical counter melody. The piece develops with a tranquil middle section from the soloist that builds for the second theme to return, performed by the ensemble while the soloist soars over the top. Ending as it starts, the piece dies away to leave the soloist performing the opening melodic phrase to a tranquil close.
As for the title: Trevone Bay is a beautiful tiny bay in Cornwall, close to Zoe’s home town of Roche. Its tranquil waters lead out to the Celtic Sea and provide a picturesque landscape. The views there can be enjoyed all year round but they are particularly beautiful at sunset.

"I always enjoy writing solos, because it is a new opportunity to compose a piece of music for an instrument to demonstrate its full musical capability. In ‘Canzona Bravura’ I was asked to compose something new and fresh for the euphonium that portrayed its technical ability and also the sonorous sound this fabulous instrument has to offer.
The piece is in ternary form with sections A/B/A (fast/slow/fast). I wanted to write music that sounded fun to play and also music that the audience would enjoy listening to. I also wanted to give the music a more modern feel and so the relentless quaver pulse from the ensemble provides a continuous heartbeat for the soloist to sit on and show off its technical capability.
The euphonium shows off its technical ability through the slurred quavers and running semiquavers. However, the lyrical playing which is prevalent throughout the slow B section gets an introduction during the fast A section at bar 38. It gives the listener a taste of the slow melody that is to come and also an opportunity to join the euphonium with its unfashionable cousin the baritone as they play a duet together.
‘Canzona Bravura’ definitely offers plenty for the soloist to get their teeth into and also allows them the opportunity to enjoy their lyrical playing to the full. There is a lot of musical material which is passed between soloist and accompanying ensemble which forges a strong musical link within the music. It provides an excellent opportunity for the music to connect with soloist, ensemble and audience."

This piece was commissioned by Swiss euphonium virtuoso Eich Schmidli.
Bert Appermont dug deep into Celtic music for inspiration and created a fantasy that shows off the incredible, but often overlooked, versatility of the euphonium. Charming lyrical melodies, virtuosic runs and exciting, colourful tuttis create plenty of contrast in this exciting work. The difficulty level for the soloist and band means almost any band to perform this piece and showcase their euphonium player.
Bb and Eb duet with piano accompaniment. This duet was originally composed for Horn and Flugel can be performed with any combination of Bb and Eb instruments.
