Symphony for Double Brass on a theme of Purcell

1995 marks the tercentenary of Purcell’s death, and my new score Revelation has been written as a tribute to his music and the ornate and confident spirit of his age.
There are five major sections:
1 Prologue
2 Variations on a ground bass I
3 Fugue
4 Variations on a ground bass II
5 Epilogue and Resurrection

The score uses many features of the Baroque Concerto Grosso, and arranges players in two equal groups from which soloists emerge to play in a variety ofvirtuoso ensembles. It quotes freely from Purcell’s own piece Three Parts on a Ground in which he has composed a brilliant sequence of variations over a repeating six-note bass figure. This original motif can be heard most clearly beneath the duet for Cornet 5 and Soprano at the beginning of the 2nd section.

There is, of course, a religious dimension to Revelation as the title suggests, and the score is prefaced by lines by the 17th century poet John Donne. His Holy Sonnet paraphrases the Book of Revelation in which the dead are raised at the sounds of the last trumpet. Donne’s trumpets are themselves placed stereophonically “. . . At the round Earth’s imagined corners” and it is this feature that today’s players represent as they move around the performing area. Their final apocalyptic fanfares can be heard at the close of the score, as Purcell’s music re-enters in a lasting tribute to England’s first composer of genius.

September 1995

At the round Earth imagined corners, blow
your trumpets, angels, and arise, arise
from death, you numberless infinities
Of souls, and to your scattered bodies go.
All whom the flood did, and fire shall o ‘erthrow
All whom war, dearth, age, agues, tyrannies,
Despair, law, chance hath slain, and you whose eyes
Shall Behold God, and never taste death woe.

"My Strength, My Tower".

Set as the 2nd. Section Testpiece for the 2008 National Finals in Harrogate.

Comments by Lt.-Col. (Dr) Ray Steadman-Allen, O.F.

Theme
The theme was published in The Musical Salvationist, March-April 1953. The title derives from the words associated with the melody when published: ‘Thee
will I love, my strength, my tower’, a hymn by Johann Scheffler, translated by John Wesley. A strong modal flavour is characteristic of the theme. Where the
Bass Eb departs from the bass part (between bars eight and fourteen), keep the Bass Bb a little stronger.

Variation 1
This is a light and graceful movement with a good deal of imitative writing. Each ‘line’ should be confident and clear. This movement leads straight into the succeeding one.

Variation 2
Fire and ferocity are asked for in the course of this variation. Let there be no timidity, but a positive and brilliant attack throughout the band. Establish a three-in- a-bar pulse right from the start with a drive and verve which will communicate the requisite mood. Contrast is made in the first-time-bracket in Section F, but it is short-lived.

Variation 3
Apart from the obvious importance of the solo line with its arabesques and arpeggii, points to be considered in this variation are:
(i) The recurring and overlapping figure encountered at the outset (1st Baritone, Solo Horn, 2nd Cornet and Soprano)
(ii) The use of the Basses
(iii) Interpolations in ‘open harmony’, as exemplified by the Trombones in the sixth bar of Section G.
In view of the general mood of the music, the fp. indications should not be attacked savagely — in fact, it was noted on the composer’s original hand-written score that these effects should be ‘rather gentle’.

Variation 4
The fourth variation is a Passacaglia, which is a dance form (in triple-measure) originating in southern Europe. It was widely used by 1 7th and 1 8th century composers in the form of developed passages (amounting almost to variations) over a ‘ground bass’. Although normally a triple-measure is used in this form, nevertheless there is historical precedent for its use in other measures. In this variation, the quadruple-measure is adopted, and the ‘ground’ given out at once by the Basses. A superstructure of varying pattern and intensity is then begun, with the ‘ground bass’ maintaining its steady progression throughout. Close attention to the construction will reveal the ingenuity with which fragments of the ‘ground bass’, plain or decorated, are combined and used in a number of ways, revealing the composer’s mastery of contrapuntal technique.
At Section L, for instance, the ‘ground bass’ is inverted, imitated in a stretto-like manner, and set against the Trombones proceeding in the orthodox direction (in thirds). Before this combination is complete, the Euphoniums and Baritones begin a repeat of the Cornet inversion; halfway through this, Flugel and 2 Comet take up the same strain. So the music proceeds and is built up. Note in the ninth bar of this section how the Basses play the ‘ground bass’ in ‘double-time’ whilst the Trombones sound the inverted form against it in the normal note-values. Such analysis is strongly urged upon those who would teach this piece to their band; whilst it is agreed that a good performance can be obtained by reading the notes and general directions accurately, nevertheless an intelligent reading, which will bring musical satisfaction, is only attained by a grasp of the principles which lie beneath the notes.

Variation 5
All players must have their wits about them in this briskly-moving and scintillating final movement. Sudden variations of dynamic abound. The tempo is constant until Section Q is reached. Make the concluding bars full and convincing.
Ray Steadman-Allen (1962)

This work was originally published in the Festival Series in January 1963, and has recently been adapted by Brian Bowen to include a Repiano Cornet part and additional Percussion.

Rienzi was Wagner's third opera, completed when he was 27.
The overture was the last section to be written and features a number of themes from the opera including the opening trumpet call, taken from Act 3. After a somewhat sinister Introduction ( mp3 extract 1 ), the mood changes to one of optimism, with an expansive and memorable melody played, in this transcription, by the horns. Tension returns as trombones and cornets do battle with each other before the earlier melody returns on full band ( mp3 extract 2 ), with tricky embellishments in cornets & euphoniums.

It later emerges as the first part of the 2nd. subject group in the Exposition, which begins as the music goes into a quicker tempo, marked "Allegro energico" ( mp3 extract 3 ).
The music now arrives in the dominant key for the 2nd. subject, and the melody from the Introduction is now played as a cornet solo ( mp3 extract 4 ).

The Development section calls for stamina and a good technique from the whole band. A brief reference to the Introduction leads to a fairly conventional Recapitulation. A fast and furious Coda ( mp3 extract 5 ) referring to a number of earlier ideas brings the Overture to an exhilarating conclusion.

Riffs and Interludes
was written in Autumn, 1997 and commissioned by the Stavanger Brass Band with support from Norsk KuIturrd for the 1998 Norwegian Brass Band Championship. This is a perfect contest piece for Brass Bands in the top level. The composer says: "Riffs and Interludes is a book of memories from the time as a band musician. Riffs, tunes and sounds which has influenced my own music-writing."
1. "ABa funk - from Heaton to T.O.P.x.
The first movement is very rythmic and energic. You will may recognize a motif from Wilfred Heaton’s Contest Music, camuflated in rythmical funky patterns.

2. Songs from a singing Mountain (Lento ma poco rubato)
The songs are short and simple, sometimes only a few notes. The mountain is massive and consists of strong chords.

3. Mechanical Dance Sequence (Vivace)
Episodes from the opening bars are repeated troughout in different variations and transpositions. A short but lively coda makes a brilliant conclusion.

Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen (1964)
Aagaard-Nilsen’s production bears witness of an un-dogmatic and playful approach to composition. After having established himself in the Bergen area by the end of the I 980s, he started composing music for brass band, for which he obtained a quick success. Gradually, his contact with the contemporary music scene in Bergen resulted in commissions from the Norwegian section of ISCM, the BIT 20 Ensemble and festivals Music Factory and Autunnale.
