The Dreaded Groove and Hook is an up-tempo acid-jazz number that draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared round the band, whilst the hook, in ‘pop’ terms, is the catchy bit of the song. The whole band joins in to play a huge ‘riff’ that acts as a chorus to the jazz-like verses.
The piece was commissioned by Jason Katsikaris and The Leyland Band, who gave the first performance as part of their programme for the Brass In Concert Championships, held at The Sage, Gateshead on the 16th November 2008. It has now been recorded by the same band and conductor on the CD entitled Penlee, which can be purchased from this website by clicking here.

Dream Catchers is written in the style of a youth band test piece with lots of jazz and funk influences. The idea behind the piece is that every young musician has a chance of "catching" their dreams by performing to as high a standard as they can. In the first section of Dream Catchers the performers are required to use their technical ability with lots of intricate playing, whereas in the dream-like middle section they play with beauty and style.
Written for the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain.
Dream Catchers is a test piece for bands with the added test that all the soloists where marked need to stand at the front of the band to perform their solos. The composer has made suggestions as to which soloist should play the solos for example Flugel Horn and Cornet to start. However, the conductor can choose which soloists play the marked solos throughout the piece. The only rule that must be observed is that where a Bb. Instrument is indicated to play the solo, it must be a Bb. instrument - and the same with Eb. instruments.

Howard Snell writes : "Unreleased until now, I arranged the Finale from Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique as part of my series of band finales some 3 decades ago - together with Pines of Rome, Procession to the Minster, Entry of the Gods, Bolero, Daphnis & Chloe, American in Paris, March to the Scaffold etc etc. The full title is ‘The Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath. It could easily have been ‘The Nightmare’! Normally, music that depends on jaw-dropping effects loses its interest for the public very quickly. Not so this music, which continues to astound everyone who hears it. "

"Dream of the Return is one of the tracks on Pat Metheny’s album of 1989 “Letter from Home”.
The CD recording is remarkable for its variety, imagination and musical artistry, and the combining of Latin American rhythms with jazz harmony produces magical results especially with Pat Metheny’s guitar playing.
While most tracks on the CD are instrumental, this song stands out because of its beautiful lyrics (by Pedro Aznar) which, roughly translated, are:
I tossed a poem to the sea that took my questions and my voice.
Like a sinking ship it was lost in the waves.
I begged it not to return without having seen the open sea
And in my dreams, show me what it had seen.
Even if it did not come back I would know that it had journeyed.
Floating all the time on calm or stormy seas
Even though some safe haven waits.
I waited long for its answer and almost gave up hope,
And with a yearning voice I cried desperately to the heavens.
Much later, somehow, it was washed ashore like an answered prayer.
Now the rolling sea beats in my veins and sets my heart free.

The Dream Team was originally commissioned by Ronald Holz for the 2012 Great American Brass Band Festival held in Danville, Kentucky. The event, subtitled Trumpetissimo, took the form of a salute to the founder of the GABBF, one of America's most revered trumpet players Vince DiMartino.
The Dream Team was first performed by six leading American trumpet players accompanied by the Atlantic Brass Band, and makes reference to Copland's famous trumpet call, Fanfare to the Common Man, before segueing into latin- styled solo breaks. This revised version includes a greater involvement from the trombone section to create an antiphonal cornet and trombone feature.
Extracts performed by the Brighouse and Rastrick Band, conductor David King. Full recording available on War of the Worlds - The Music of Peter Graham - available on this site.
A demanding but rewarding concert finale or first half finisher by Dan Price.
Commissioned by Philip Harper for the Cory Bands 2013 tour to Australia, Dreamtime draws inspiration from Australian Aboriginal mythology. The Dreamtime is a sacred era in which the Aborigines believe ancestral totemic (symbolic) spirits created the world. The work is heavily percussive, includes a part for narrator and even includes a pseudo didgeridoo part created with the use of multi-phonics in the euphoniums and tubas however; a convincing performance of this work can still be achieved without the use of either the multi-phonics, narration and a carefully considered selection of the available percussion parts.
