Realms of Asgard is a symphonic poem for brass and percussion which comprises of seven musical scenes, each reflecting the composers impressions of the individual worlds found in the Yggdrasill legend.

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasill (Ig-dru-cell) is an immense Ash tree that connects the nine home-worlds of the Norse cosmos. Asgard sits at its pinnacle where the High Gods look down and oversee the activities in the other worlds. The nine worlds are:

Niðavellir – A Dark Dwelling
Vanaheimr – Home of the Vanir
Jötunheimr – Home of the Giants
Niflheim – Mist Home
Álfheimr – Elf Home
Midgard – Middle Enclosure (Earth) & Asgard – Home of Æsir

Commissioned by Hull City Council to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the work of WlLLIAM WILBERFORCE in establishing the Abolition of the Slave Trade

1. The Clapham Marches
2. Sermon on John Newton's Hymn "Amazing Grace"
3. Cadenza and Reprise

WILLIAM WILBERFORCE was Hull's most prominent MP in the early 19th Century. Although he was involved in many charitable projects, establishing the RSPCA and London's National Gallery, it was his successful campaign to abolish the slave trade which has secured his reputation. This new composition is inspired by his work, his belief in the saving power of evangelism, to change
prevailing attitudes and establish freedom for all.

John Newton, sometime slave ship captain, was one of Wilberforce's mentors in early life and he composed many well-known hymns. "Amazing Grace" has become the text most associated with black musicians, and forms the centrepiece of my score. Wilberforce was based in Clapham and his
rallies and marches were a regular feature of the outreach of the "Clapham Saints" in the early years
of the 19th Century.

Duration 12 minutes

The score requires some extra movement of players. Solo cornet to 'off-stage' position.

REM-SCAPES - Parts & Score

Grade 6
Duration 15:35

Sweet echoes of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata in the introduction bring a gentle slumber. Breathing is calm and sleep holds the promise of rest and relaxation.
With the onset of the REM sleep phase, however, in which most dreams take place and where the day’s events are worked through, we hear other sounds played.
With distorted sounds, reminiscent of an old gramophone, the music pulls the listener inevitably ever deeper into the dreamscape, in a very realistic dangerous situation that comes to a dramatic head. It triggers a desperate struggle between the impulse to awaken and the exhausting urge to flee. For a short moment, it seems as if the wakeful urge has won out, before dream’s powerful spell is again cast, and there’s no escape

Remembrance consists of three sections that are played without pause. Each part is characterised by the diversity of its music.

The first part displays a great deal of expressive variety combining joy with melancholy. The second section focuses on the contrast between a vertical melody and horizontal, less angular solo lines that naturally flow to a brilliantly sonorous tutti. A bridge passage with highly demanding cadenzas leads to a flourishing finale and the piece ends in a joyful and enthusiastic mood.

A testing work that will give your band something to get their teeth into!

Symphony for Double Brass on a theme of Purcell

1995 marks the tercentenary of Purcell’s death, and my new score Revelation has been written as a tribute to his music and the ornate and confident spirit of his age.
There are five major sections:
1 Prologue
2 Variations on a ground bass I
3 Fugue
4 Variations on a ground bass II
5 Epilogue and Resurrection

The score uses many features of the Baroque Concerto Grosso, and arranges players in two equal groups from which soloists emerge to play in a variety ofvirtuoso ensembles. It quotes freely from Purcell’s own piece Three Parts on a Ground in which he has composed a brilliant sequence of variations over a repeating six-note bass figure. This original motif can be heard most clearly beneath the duet for Cornet 5 and Soprano at the beginning of the 2nd section.

There is, of course, a religious dimension to Revelation as the title suggests, and the score is prefaced by lines by the 17th century poet John Donne. His Holy Sonnet paraphrases the Book of Revelation in which the dead are raised at the sounds of the last trumpet. Donne’s trumpets are themselves placed stereophonically “. . . At the round Earth’s imagined corners” and it is this feature that today’s players represent as they move around the performing area. Their final apocalyptic fanfares can be heard at the close of the score, as Purcell’s music re-enters in a lasting tribute to England’s first composer of genius.
Philip Wilby
September 1995

At the round Earth imagined corners, blow
your trumpets, angels, and arise, arise
from death, you numberless infinities
Of souls, and to your scattered bodies go.
All whom the flood did, and fire shall o ‘erthrow
All whom war, dearth, age, agues, tyrannies,
Despair, law, chance hath slain, and you whose eyes
Shall Behold God, and never taste death woe.
