Duration: 3m13s Difficulty: Advanced
Smile received its premiere at The Sage, Gateshead, on November 17th 2014 by trombone soloist Chris Gomersall and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band conducted by Robert Childs. The piece formed part of their winning Brass in Concert programme entitled ‘Lest We Forget'.
A young Charlie Chaplin starred in his first movie in February 1914, six months after the outbreak of World War I, and by July 1915 Chaplin had become a cultural phenomenon as the great entertainer. He was the film industry's first international star and a particular favourite of the troops.
Conceived as the instrumental theme for Chaplin's 1936 comedy Modern Times, the song known to us all as Smile was composed by Chaplin himself. This arrangement features the original version of the song, before breaking into an upbeat big band version of the song, as performed by Michael Buble, featuring an extended jazz break for either Flugel Horn or Cornet.
Category: SOLOS - E♭.Soprano Cornet Composer: Paul Sharman
Duration: 4m00s
This Soprano Cornet solo is a 'song without words'. There is no specific word association; the music alone attempts to create an atmosphere of calm and serenity, and transport you to another place in the way only music can.
A Euphonium Feature for Brass Band, and a good choice to showcase the talents of the bands Euphonium player, Babylon opens with a driving 3/4 time section led by trombones and percussion.
The Euphonium solo begins with a flowing quaver melody which is rhythmically supported by the entire band, and builds until a change of pace.
Moving into a slower 4/4 time section to show the lyrical quality of the Euphonium.
This slower middle section continues to build encompassing the whole band, until the soloist takes over and brings us back to the opening 3/4 time again, gaining pace for a furious climax.
A lively solo feature with a band accompaniment which is not too demanding.

A virtuosic cornet solo by Dan Price.
The Moody Mallard is an up-beat solo for cornet and brass band in a Latin-American style. The work is percussive throughout and the opening theme takes inspiration from the mambo whilst the second introduces the stylistic elements that we associate with the tango. There is a haughtiness present in most Latin music which is reminiscent to the persona of many birds but most noticeable in the duck known as the Mallard. To most people, the male or drake is the most recognisable of common ducks with his squat, inverted neck, white collar and glossy green head.

Brass Band Solo Series - Grade 4 (Soloist 5)
A virtuosic cornet solo by Dan Price
The Sultry Swan is a slow melody for cornet and brass band and has two clearly defined musical ideas in its construction. The introduction and first theme are lyrical in texture and evoke images of the river bank, the water gently ebbing to and fro whilst the swan glides gracefully across its glassy surface. Although there are no other birds as elegant as the swan in water there are also none as comical out of it, and in contrast to the first theme the second theme reflects the natural ‘waddle’ of the swan when it is on dry land. A laid back solo for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
This flugelhorn feature for Brass Band highlights the warm and gentle qualities of the instrument.
The melody is lyrical, but not too demanding and focuses on tone and feel – using a repeating motif as its theme with an almost fanfare, ascending opening melody line.
Silhouette has a short introduction with muted cornets which sets up the back drop for the solo to play over. The background accompaniment changes as the melody continues, creating a kind of musical silhouette for the soloist to play over.
The piece develops as the band takes over with layered themes, eventually returning to the soloist who brings the piece to a gentle close. An ideal solo item and concert filler.

Category: SOLOS for E♭. Horn Composer: Joseph Haydn Arranger: Owen Farr
Duration: c. 6.00”
Owen Farr writes about the music... The cello concerto in C Major was listed in one of Haydn’s own catalogues but remained unknown for almost 200 years until it was discovered by the Czech musicologist Oldrich Pulkert in 1961. The work was probably written for one of Haydn’s closest friends, Joseph Weigi who played principal cello for the court orchestra of Prince Paul Anton Esterazy. It is thought to have been written for an Esterhazy court concert in Fisenstadt during the early 1760’s shortly after Haydn became Kapellmeister to Esterhazy. Although the work wasn’t discovered until 1961 at a library in Prague. it has become one of Haydn’ most popular works for the cello. Its first modern day performance was May 19th, 1962 in Prague.
