Category: SOLOS - Euphonium Composer: Robert Redhead
Previously only available in manuscript form, this euphonium solo with brass band accompaniment is now available in printed format. Euphony (meaning a pleasant, sweet sound) is based on the tunes of Sidney Cox with material taken from the songs; 'He found me', 'This one thing I know', 'You can tell out the sweet story' and 'Deep and wide'. At the time of writing, the composer remarked; 'The euphonium is often associated with melodies and harmonies that lend themselves to pleasing sounds'. That is true of this solo but it also presents considerable technical challenges for the soloist in terms of range and technique.

A charming cornet solo written by Terry Camsey, former principal cornet with the International Staff Band, and featured by him on many occasions. Based on his own tune, Camsey has added a few tricks that will provide the soloist with a good test of lip flexibility.
In the You Tube performance provided here, Richard Marshall accompanied by the Black Dyke Band performs the cornet solo "Life's Pageant" by Terry Camsey at the New York Staff Band's 129th annual festival held on March 19, 2016 at the Centennial Memorial Temple in New York City.

“As a bass trombonist, I spent many years of my adolescence playing in youth orchestras, engaging in musical daydreams. I would visualize myself jumping up from the back of the orchestra to unleash improvisations much to the conductor's horror. The resultant three-movement, thirteen-minute work has enjoyed a robust life with performances by notable orchestras all around the world. Happily, the concerto works well as a recital piece, with many accomplished college players having won concerto competitions performing it. Jazz elements were inescapable, and realizing my old nightmare/dream, quite a bit of the trombone solo is meant to be improvised. I made a recording of the concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra, which was included on a CD called Bach to Brubeck released on Koch International Classics. Having already become popular as a bass trombone work with orchestra accompaniment, renowned British Bass Trombonist and publisher Roger Argente suggested he release a special Brass Band arrangement of my concerto. Roger knew the piece well because years ago he played the European premiere of the concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall.” – Chris Brubeck

Category: SOLOS for Bass Trombone Composer: Gareth Wood
Duration: 13:00 minutes
Written in 2006 for Roger Argente, Gareth Wood brings his considerable experience of writing for brass, and brass bands in particular, to an instrument not often blessed with opportunities for solo exposure. It is scored for soloist accompanied by traditional brass band line-up, including timpani and two percussion, and follows the standard three-movement pattern. In the first movement, the soloist launches straight into the musical argument with a low-lying repeated quaver figure punctuated by the band. A lyrical second subject in the high register is also entrusted to the soloist, and the movement comes to a thrilling conclusion. The slow movement opens softly with the percussion, and a mournful bass line sets the mood for a thoughtful long melody. It reaches a powerful climax, which subsides to a return of the opening mood. In the march-like finale, the soloist is pitted against a number of solo instruments from the band and a driving ostinato carries the momentum through to the blazing ending.
Percussion: 3 Players playing timpani, bongos, bass drum, side drum, suspended cymbal, tam-tam, claves, triangle, tambourine, xylophone and glockenspiel

“Inchcolm” is an island in the Forth Estuary first visited by St Columba in 567 and mentioned in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The ruins of Columba’s Abbey are regularly shrouded in mist, which brings with it a flavour of mystery and legend. Composer and distinguished French horn player Terry Johns (Drac to his friends) was commissioned to write this work for Superbrass and their “water influenced” 2nd album, “Brass Taps”. Drac requested that he be allowed to write a solo feature with a “proper” tune for Horn. Kingdom Brass in Scotland has recently premiered “Inchcolm” in it’s new brass band form and the solo part is playable by either a Tenor or French Horn player.
Percussion: 3 players playing timpani, glockenspiel, triangle, pair of cymbals and suspended cymbal.
Grade 3: Medium Playable by 1st and 2nd Section Bands upwards.
