Composed on the tenth anniversary of the Piper Alpha tragedy for solo unaccompanied trumpet and dedicated to all those who died.
On Wednesday July 6th. 1988 at 10pm there was an explosion on board the Piper Alpha oil-rig in the North Sea. Two more massive explosions occurred eventually leaving one hundred and sixty seven men dead.
Ten years later while watching a documentary on the disaster I was struck by the survivor’s accounts of how despite the intense heat and noise, which emanated from the explosions, there was also a strange air of peacefulness. Being an Aberdonian and knowing many who work in and around the oil industry I decided to write a piece for solo trumpet which evoked this feeling of peacefulness.

Shackelton’s Cross was inspired by a painting created in 1957 by the English artist Edward Seago (1910–1974). The title refers to a cross which was erected to the memory of Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led a number of explorations to the Antarctic. Shackleton died in 1922 whilst on a Polar expedition, and the cross can be found on a promontory at the entrance to the bay at Grytviken Whaling Station in South Georgia. The painting is owned by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and was part of an exhibition at Buckingham Palace from October 2011 to April 2012.
Originally scored for oboe, trumpet and small orchestra, Daniel Hall’s sensitive arrangement follows the composer’s alternative version for solo trumpet and organ, created for Chrispian Steele-Perkins (trumpet) and David Goode (organ).

This sublimely simple piece is the perfect choice of solo for bands looking to add a special moment to their concerts. With parts not too demanding, this solo would suit up and coming cornet players that would like the chance to fulfil their moment in the spotlight. Playable by 4th. Section bands upwards.
Drummers are now an integral part of the modern brass band that they accompany. However, there are not too many chances for your drummer to take the limelight. All that can now change with this light-hearted new release. A light swing piece in style, this entertaining work offers drummers the chance to show off their skills and more importantly, is accessible to players of many levels. Whilst a drum part is clearly written out, the soloist is advised to ‘ad lib’ throughout, allowing the player to make their part as easy or as complex as they wish. This is great showcase item that is just something different from the norm and suits all concert programmes.
Category: SOLOS - Euphonium Composer: Peter Meechan
Alu was commissioned by Pat Herak for his wife Diana, for their 10th wedding anniversary. It was premiered by Diana and the Brass Band of Columbus, USA.
It is a simple, reflective piece, which grows from a small idea first heard in the baritone and changes throughout, although the opening material is never far away.
The solo part is equally suitable for baritone or euphonium.
