Black and White Rag is a 1908 ragtime composition by George Botsford. It was made famous by pianist Winifred Atwell and it helped her to establish an international profile. It was also used as the theme tune to the BBC snooker series ‘Pot Black’.Section: 4+
Paul Lovatt-Cooper has taken this tune and arranged it as a xylophone solo with brass band accompaniment.
When performing the piece it is relatively straight forward. However, the soloist needs to be aware that the split part at rehearsal figure B in the first four bars is a melody and accompanying figure.
The ‘stride like’ quavers that start on notes C and G are to be played with the left stick, while the syncopated solo melody line is to be played with the right stick. At the fifth bar of figure B the soloist can play the semiquavers as they see fit and then return to their ‘stride’ style at bar 46 and so on when it appears.
This is a great Rag and it works really well as a solo showcase for xylophone.

Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro, was based on what was a rather scandalous play by Pierre Beaumarchais, because the drama involves an incompetent nobleman being upstaged by a crafty, quick-witted servant named Figaro, in their quest for the same woman. The action takes place in just one day and offers a series of awkward and humorous situations, complete with a vibrant dialogue between the all the main characters. Voi Che Sapete is performed by Cherubino, who is about to be sent off to the army because the Count finds him a nuisance. When Cherubino appears before the Countess and Susanna to tell them of his fate, this aria is sung at the request of Susanna for a love song. Cherubino is characterized as a young adolescent who is in love with every woman he meets.

One Fine Day is the opera's most famous aria. It comes at the beginning of Act II, which is set three years after the action of Act I. Pinkerton, Butterfly's husband, is a US Naval Officer and he had to return to the sea shortly after their wedding. In the aria, she sings about the day he will return, seeing the ship appear on the horizon, then seeing it enter the harbour. When he arrives, they will be runited for ever.
The aria Senza Mamma (Without your Mother), sung in the opera by Sister Angelica, is one of the most poignant moments in any of Puccini's works, and has remained a repertoire favourite. Suor Angelica is the second instalment in Puccini's triptych of one-act operas commonly known as Il trittico. The opera chronicles the fall, redemption, and final transfiguration of its central character, Sister Angelica, who has taken the veil in repentance for bearing a child out of wedlock. The libretto, by Giovacchino Forzano, was immediately appealing to the composer, whose sister Igenia was Mother Superior of the convent at Vicepelago. Though it contains some of Puccini's most adventurous writing (the musical language at times even flirts with polytonality) the work has not enjoyed popularity comparable to that of its companions, Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi, each of which has enjoyed an independent life in the repertory.

O Mio Babbino Caro (Oh My Dear Papa) is taken from the opera Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini. It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between Schicchi and his prospective in-laws have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from Rinuccio, the boy she loves. It provides a contrasting interlude expressing lyrical simplicity and single-hearted love in the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, double-dealing and feuding in medieval Florence. The story of Gianni Schicchi concerns a rich old man who dies leaving all his possessions to the local monastery. His outraged relatives persuade Gianni Schicchi to impersonate the dead man and to dictate a new will. It is the second opera of Puccini’s operatic triptych, which also includes Il Tabarro and Suor Angelica.

Featured by many Euphonium soloists over the years, the main aim of the soloist here is to re-create the sonorous sound of the cello, for which instrument it was set in its original form in 'Carnival of the Animals'.

This solo was written for Philip Cobb and takes its inspiration from Virtuosity, a trumpet solo by Kenny Baker. The song Hand me down my silver trumpet is referred to in the two outer sections while the laid-back, jazzy central section features the song When the roll is called up yonder. The reason for including this song is the first line of the first verse which reads When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound.

Slate, Sea and Sky features a musical landscape and journey in three integrated and continuous sections, led by the cornet soloist alongside ensembles broadly representing the title's elements: ‘slate’ (flugelhorn, tenor horns and trombones); ‘sea’ (baritones, euphoniums and basses) and ’sky’ (comets).
These alternate throughout with the full band, travelling towards and through a storm, and emerging into bright skies at the end.
The title Slate, Sea and Sky is inspired by Norman Bissell’s evocative poem of the same name, found in a book of poetry given to me by a close friend, to
