Eb Horn Solo with Piano Accompaniment
Nightlights was commissioned by Chris Jeans and Don Collins for Youth Brass 2000, to be used as part of their programme at the 2019 European Championships.
Written during January 2019, Nightlights received its world premiere by Youth Brass 2000, conducted by Chris Jeans with Siobhan Bates as soloist, at the 2019 European Brass Band Championships in Montreux, Switzerland.
Nightlights is intended to illustrate a winter’s evening looking out across Lake Geneva from Montreux.
Tiny lights appear beneath the mountains from faraway homes and vehicles, flickering in the distance and shimmering in the reflections on the water. Tiny, blinking nightlights against the inky blue of the clear sky. Thousands of stars shine above, blurring the boundaries between land, water, and the heavens into a sparkling ether.
Transfixed, the bustle of sounds and lights from Montreux seems a lot further away than it is in reality. Eventually, each little light blinks out, one at a time, leaving the chill of the cold night air and an empty sky.

One of the few standard works for the trombone to be written in the 19th century, newly edited to enhance its romantic style, with a new piano reduction somewhat easier than most other editions.
"...Christopher Mowat provides some excellent editorial notes explaining his aims. This is a fine performing edition that clarifies several issues of articulation and rhythm. Mowat also includes a handy solution to the lip trills at the end of the first and third movements." Reviewed, 'Music Teacher'

Composed to commemorate the life Henry Nichols, killed in the Battle of the Somme in 1917, the music has a peaceful tranquillity, but also a deep sense of tragedy and loss. It ends positively, with the wish that hope can come from desperation. Recorded by Glyn Williams with Cory Band.

Aria was commissioned by and written for the remarkable tenor horn player, Sheona White. The work opens with an accompanied recitative, which leads to a change of key where the main melody is presented. This, in turn, serves as an introduction to another melodic idea, marked calmato. The band takes up this theme and then takes centre stage with a passionate repeat of the main theme, which is completed by the soloist. A cornet then plays the calmato theme against which the soloist plays a counter melody. This leads to a return of the opening recitative which brings the work to a peaceful close. A fantastic new addition to the solo repertoire for this much neglected solo instrument.

Gramercy Tenor Horn Album
l am delighted to present this collection of solos for Tenor Horn, part of a series of albums planned for brass instruments including Euphonium, Trombone and Cornet The solos are for advanced (and in some cases virtuoso) players in mind and although designed for Tenor Horn most of the pieces are suitable for any Eb instrument.
DELIVERANCE is the fourth movement of my suite War of the Worlds which was commissioned by the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music Saxophone Orchestra and first performed by them in the Maeda Hall, Japan on June 29 20 I 2, the composer conducting. The music is dedicated to Professor Shin-ichi lwamoto.
The suite takes inspiration from the I953 film script adaptation of the famous HG Wells novel and key scenes from the film are set as individual movements. The scene set for mvt 4 finds survivors seeking sanctuary in the Church of Santa Maria, still standing among the burning ruins of Los Angeles, and praying for Deliverance from the invaders.
COSSACK FIRE DANCE is the central movement of Call of the Cossacks, a suite originally written for the Black Dyke Brass Band. Based on the folk song Mazeltov the music brings to mind part of the Cossack wedding ceremony where, following a Klezmer style clarinet call, each guest around the camp fire comes forward in turn to offer congratulations.
The multiple instrumentalists of the original have been supplanted by a single "guest" whose increasingly attention seeking behaviour includes quoting from a number of popular musical display pieces...
ENCORE is based upon the study Spinnlied by David Popper (I843-l9l3) who is best remembered as a prolific composer of cello music. The string techniques exploited in the original study have been replaced by those regularly encountered by advanced brass players, with double-tonguing front and centre.
Jules Verne's I864 novel journey to the Centre of the Earth takes the form of a sequence of diary entries by Axel, nephew of explorer Professor Otto Lidenbrock, as they undertake "hair-breadth ‘scapes and ventures perilous" in a vast interior world.
SOLILOQUY reflects on a key scene of the book; Axel’s despair as he becomes separated and is lost in the labyrinth.

Gramercy Euphonium Album
I am delighted to present this collection of solos for Euphonium, the first in a series of albums, with Cornet/Trumpet, Tenor Horn and Trombone to follow.
The solos are for advanced (and in some cases virtuoso) players in mind and include solo adaptations of two of Gramercy Music's most requested titles, together with two titles taken from “classical” literature.

The Fantasy on Sempre Libera looks back with affection to the |9th century, a period when the great instrumental virtuosi reined supreme. Pianists Liszt and -Thalberg and violinists Paganini and Saraste amazed audiences with their wide- ranging technical and artistic abilities, fuelled by increasingly difficult paraphrases and variations on popular tunes of the day. This pastiche of the style was arranged for David Thornton who recorded the work with the Brighouse & Rastrick Band.
A MINSTREL BOY features the ballad of the same name and the jig Tossing the Feathers, both extracted from my Celtic celebration Gaelforce. The adaptation was made a number of years ago for a recording by David Childs and the Cory Band.

Solo for Bb. Baritone
Composed for World Solo Champion Katrina Marzella and the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, A Hebridean Lullaby is a beautiful and haunting melody from the pen of Philip Harper, taking its inspiration from the music and folksong of the Hebrides; a cluster of islands off the west coast of Scotland. Commissioned through a BBC Fame Academy Bursary, this piece is one which is enjoyed and admired by both performers and audiences the world over. The atmosphere created by the score is simply stunning. It’s an outstanding addition to the baritone horn’s concert repertoire.

In 2017 I accepted a new job opportunity that required me to move halfway across the country. While it was an exciting opportunity, it meant leaving behind all the friends and colleagues I had grown to love. A Simple Song was a way for me to express this bittersweet goodbye, both sad to leave people behind, yet hopeful of what was to come. The premiere was given with The National Capital Band, where I had served as principal euphonium since 2011, less than a week before I left. It is dedicated to those I left behind.

Euphonium Solo - This solo was originally composed and made famous in the early 1900s by Simone Mantia, the same man responsible for the popular variations on 'Believe me if all those endearing young charms'. Here the solo line is Mantia's original but the arranger has given the accompaniment a more modern treatment. The solo begins with a dashing introduction before the main theme is heard. A set of tricky variations then follow with a couple of cadenzas thrown in for good measure! This arrangement was made at the request of Nicholas Childs and Black Dyke Band and first performed by David Thornton and Black Dyke Band at the National Brass Band Championships Gala Concert 2004. .
