ARRANGER’S NOTES
This beautifully poignant Barbara Streisand song was arranged especially for comet soloist Kirsty Abbotts for performance with the Canton Main Frickley Colliery Band at the Brass in Concert competition 2013. Kirsty received the best soloist award (and best principal cornet) performing this arrangement and the piece was again featured in Canton Main’s 2014 Butlins entertainment programme.
The arrangement features a quintet of Flugel, Solo Horn, Solo Baritone, Euphonium and Eb Bass and works well with the quintet standing behind the soloist in a horseshoe shape to the side of the band (and is particularly effective played from memory!). The melody and accompaniments should ideally exploit the rubato nature of the song and the soloist is recommended to seek out the original song and it’s lyrics.

Horn Solo
"Mama" was the first original song that was performed by the male operatic group, Il Divo. Put together by Simon Cowell, his search for 4 young singers took over 2 years before the group was finally put together. Performing lyrical songs in their operatic style worldwide and achieving number 1 hits here in the UK, Johnathan Bates has now arranged this moving number as a Eb Horn solo (would also work as a soprano solo). A heart-warming melody and a perfect addition to any bands repertoire.
The 1971 film musical Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory starred Gene Wilder in the title role. The music was written by composer/actor Anthony Newley, with lyrics provided by Leslie Bricusse, for which it received an Oscar nomination for Original Song Score.
There are several well-known songs from the film, but perhaps the most famous is Pure Imagination, which is sung by Willy Wonka as the five children and their parents enter the Chocolate Room in Wonka's factory. It has been arranged as a trombone solo and has a simple jazz-like accompaniment.
Composed in 2007, Freaks! is a brilliant virtuoso showpiece for trombone and band, full of wit and humour with some dark and disturbing moments. Higgins takes his inspiration from Tod Browning’s 1932 cult movie where the characters were real life side-show ‘freaks’.

As featured by Owen Farr on the CD "A NEW DAWN"
Performance time 5.46
Composed for, and dedicated to, Owen Farr, this single movement work for tenor horn is divided into clearly defined sections. The introduction consists of a fanfare figure which is taken up by the soloist and turned into a cheerful melody. This is developed and varied during the progress of the first section, culminating in a climax. The pace later slackens and a new theme emerges, which grows out of the opening fanfare figure. This is then taken up by the accompaniment and shared with the soloist. A return to the faster music brings a new set of variants on the original theme, which builds to a broad statement of the middle section theme. A recapitulation of the primary material is rounded off by an energetic coda, also based on earlier material.
Tenor Toccata is also available with piano accompaniment as part of Prima Vista Musikk's Owen Farr Solo Series.
