This piece takes it’s inspiration from the words of the concluding cry of the aria Nessun Dorma from Puccini’s opera Turandot.

With film-like quality Vincero; which means 'I will be victorious', wouldn’t sound out of place underscoring the likes of 'Braveheart'. Compelling 12/8 rhythms provide the foundation. Vincero is one of those pieces you can’t help tapping your feet too. A stirring work with broad melodies and catchy accompaniment.

Vita Destructa gains it title from the devastating February 2011 earthquake that hit Christchurch, New Zealand. The Christchurch area was severally damaged, 185 lives were lost and many more were severely injured. The piece contrasts violent, original music with

various transformations of the hymn tune Abide with Me in order to depict the events of the earthquake. The musical narrative embodies the underlying experiences of life in the midst of natural disaster, and show mans ability to rebuild and recover from such events.

Commissioned by Professor David King for National Australia Brass in recognition of the work done by Dame Adrienne Stewart, a longtime Christchurch resident, on behalf of the arts across Australia and New Zealand.

TODD SMITH(1996)

Todd Smith is currently a New Zealand based brass band composer. Ever since starting to learn brass instruments at age 9, Todd has always had an interest in composing. After enjoying many years of success in New Zealand as a euphonium player, it wasn't until 2013 when he received his first commission for a major work, 'Vita Destructa'. Since the premier of the work Todd has become a sort after composer in the Australasian area, becoming the Composer-in- Residence for Footscray Yarraville City Band of Australia, and becoming Associate Composer for National Australia Brass. He also has worked closely with the world famous Brighouse and Rastrick Band, with them providing world and UK premiers to two of Todds major works - 'Vita Destructa' and 'Inferno'. Although young, his talent surpasses his years as he continues to prove himself as a composer who can stand up among the very best.

This piece is inspired by NASA’s “Voyager” project, which was brought to mind by the recent mission to Mars. The two Voyager probes were launched into space in 1977 on a mission to explore the Solar System and beyond. They have now travelled far beyond Pluto and are still hurtling away from Earth at a speed of about 40,000 miles per hour! The music is intended to capture the spirit of a relentless journey into the unknown.

This work was one of twelve works commissioned by the Scottish Brass Band Association and Funded by Creative Scotland Targeted Fund - 2021

to aid Covid Recovery and support composers in Scotland.

In the You Tube video provided - the composer Cameron Mabon conducts his own work with the Whitburn Brass Band.

Four eminent Scottish composers were each commissioned to write three works - all at different levels of difficulty and styles.

The Sleeping Beauty is a ballet by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The score was completed in 1889, and is the second of his three ballets. It's theme is simplistic and focuses on the conflicting forces of good and evil through the characters the Lilac Fairy (good) and Carabosse (evil).

At the premiere in 1890 Tsar Alexander III summoned Tchaikovsky to the imperial box. The Tsar made the simple remark 'Very nice,' which irritated Tchaikovsky, who had expected a more favorable and embellished response.

The ballet's premiere received more favorable accolades than Swan Lake but Tchaikovsky never witnessed the works true success outside of Russia as he died in 1893. By 1903, The Sleeping Beauty was the second most popular ballet in the repertoire of the Imperial Ballet, having been performed 200 times in only 10 years.

The Sleeping Beauty is Tchaikovsky's longest ballet, lasting nearly four hours at full length.

Here is the waltz from Act I, also known as the Garland Waltz. It is the day of Princess Aurora's sixteenth birthday. In preparation to celebrate the Princess's birthday Catalabutte, the master-of-ceremonies discovers, in the town, peasants knitting with spindles. The King has forbid this activity on pain of death in response to the omen given by the evil fairy Carabosse at the child's christening, Carabossa predicting the child would prick her finger and die on her sixteenth birthday. The Queen calms the Kings rage and persuades the King to spare the peasants lives as it is their daughter's birthday. The towns-folk perform an elaborate dance with garlands to celebrate the sparing of life and to help conceal the spindles from the view of the Princess.

Waterfront Sketches was commissioned by the National Children's Band of Great Britain and premiered by them at Repton School in July 2016. The composer was asked to write a work reflecting the four nations that make up the United Kingdom and found inspiration in exploring the rich cultural heritage that can be found in our great port cities.

There are four separate movements:

I. BELFAST - "She was fine when she left here.."

A dark, brooding opening, full of industrial noise and clamour, and reflecting the epic construction of the SS Titanic. Little did they know...

II. GLASGOW - The Vital Spark at Broomielaw

An affectionate portrait of Neil Munro's "Para Handy Tales", and the adventures of the madcap crew of the puffer "The Vital Spark" as it sailed up and down the Firth of Clyde from its berth in the heart of Old Glasgow. Full of quirky west coast humour, and much loved by Scots the world over.

III. CARDIFF - A Romance in Black and Gold

An imaginary soundtrack to a doomed love story in the melting pot of Tiger Bay.

IV. PORTSMOUTH - Of Tallships and Towers, and Tales from Ashore

A rumbustious finale, portraying the energy and activity of this still busy waterfront, with frequent references to our glorious nautical heritage.

This is a true story, I had a dream…..

The three wise men were looking for the baby Jesus to give him their gifts. This was done somewhat in the manner of the scene of Monty Python’s ‘Life of Brian’. The search was not successful – Sir Alan Sugar (‘The 'Apprentice’) made an appearance ordering the three wise men to “get off my land”. Meanwhile, the baby Jesus slept peacefully on, unaware of the nearby disturbance. Bizarrely, this dream sequence was played out at high speed, as in the closing scene from each episode of ‘The Benny Hill Show’ of the 1970s. My arrangement attempts to portray this comical caper.

Jock McKenzie studied trumpet at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester where he was a joint recipient of the college’s concerto prize. Since 1987 Jock has based his musical career in Hampshire, working as a freelance trumpeter, conductor, composer, arranger and brass teacher. Currently Jock holds the position of Professional Leader (Brass) for Hampshire Music Service and is the Director of the Hampshire County Youth Band. It is the mix of all of these musical roles that has led to Jock establishing a reputation as a leading creator of brass music resources, particularly in the field of education and brass ensemble music
