CLOUDS - Trombone Solo - Parts & Score
Available £24.95

Categories: SOLOS - Trombone, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Anthony Ritchie

The starting point for this point was some dramatic cloud formations I experienced while in Morrinsville, New Zealand.  It was a brilliant sunny day, with occasional huge and interestingly shaped clouds floating past.  They provided inspiration for the opening texture of my piece Clouds, which is flowing and slowly unfolding in charecter.

Clouds can assume many different shapes and charecters, which is reflected in my work.  There are stormy ideas with strong rhythms, jagged ideas built from small motifs, mysterious ideas that suggest darker clouds and bright climaxes that suggest the sun bursting through.

The solo trombone is rather like a small aeroplane, weaving its way through the cloudsand enjoying a turbulent journey.  Its part is soloistic but also integrated into the overall band texture and often under pinned by the percussion, who have an important role in sustaining the momentum for the piece.

Clouds was commissioned by trombonist Dave Bremner, for performance with the New Zealand National Brass Band in the 2005 World Brass Band Championships, in the Netherlands.

COLOURS IN RAIN - Parts & Score
Available £24.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, OPENERS
Composer: Daniel Hall

Colours in Rain, was commissioned by Tredegar Town Band as the opening item in their concert the night before they defended their British Open title.

For a fanfare, this composition starts unusually.  Breaking away from the more conventional and traditional fanfare, Colours in Rain begins with the ‘Rain Motif’, a repetitive single bar that emulates the sound of rain.  The lower band follow, introducing the fanfare theme and exploit a multitude of different colours and connotations, which are uncommon in fanfares.

After a calm section the music intensifies and the main theme is once again introduced.  The theme is passed around the ensemble until the climax of the piece, where all instruments recapitulate each individual motif before the finale section.  This harmony expresses a striking colour, with rapid rhythmic motion, and is where the ‘Colours in Rain’ title originates.

CONCERT ETUDE - Cornet Solo with Brass Quartet
Available £14.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, Quartets
Composer: Alexander Goedicke
Arranger: David Childs

Alexander Goedicke was a Russian pianist and composer. Although he was a professor at the Moscow Conservatoire, Goedicke had received no formal training as a composer and his success and recognition in this field was achieved through competition entries, namely the Rubinstein Prize for Composition which he won at the tender age of 23.

Regardless of his academic qualifications, his output as a composer is substantial with recognised works including four operas, twelve extensive works for orchestra, four marches for concert band, countless chamber works and compositions for piano.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of Goedicke's music has fallen out of vogue and is rarely performed apart from his Concert Etude for trumpet with piano accompaniment which was written in 1948. This firm favourite of the trumpet repertoire has now been arranged for brass quartet by David Childs and can be performed on either trumpet or cornet.

CONCERTINO - Trombone with Piano accomp.
Available £10.95

Categories: SOLOS - Trombone, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Ferdinand David
Arranger: Christopher Mowat

Includes parts in TC and BC

One of the few standard works for the trombone to be written in the 19th century, newly edited to enhance its romantic style, with a new piano reduction somewhat easier than most other editions.

"...Christopher Mowat provides some excellent editorial notes explaining his aims. This is a fine performing edition that clarifies several issues of articulation and rhythm. Mowat also includes a handy solution to the lip trills at the end of the first and third movements." Reviewed, 'Music Teacher'

Categories: LIGHT CONCERT MUSIC, NEW & RECENT Publications
Composer: Nigel Hess
Arranger: Philip Littlemore

Duration: c.5'10"
Grade: 2nd Section and above.

As with all modern cities, London is over-crowded with motor vehicles. London is the first major city in Europe to adopt a 'Congestion Charge', and this piece (with its stop and go traffic lights) is both racy and comical. Here are Londoners attempting to go about their business in the face of overwhelming odds.....

This piece is the final movement Nigel Hess' New London Pictures which represents elements of London in the 21st Century. The other two movements are Millennium Bridge and London Eye .

CORINEUS - Parts & Score
Available £79.95

Categories: NEW & RECENT Publications, TEST PIECES (Major Works)
Composer: Christopher Bond

Premiered by Cory Band at the 2018 Festival of Brass, Manchester. Selected as the set-work for the Championship Section at the 2019 National Youth Championships of Great Britain.

Corineus, in medieval British legend, was a prodigious warrior, a fighter of giants, and the eponymous founder of Cornwall. The first of the legendary rulers of Cornwall, he is described as a character of strength and power. It is on the medieval ruler that this new work, Corineus, is based, presented in three contrasting sections.

The work opens with heraldic fanfares and a sense of jubilance before presenting musical material which changes and develops organically, portraying the journey taken by Corineus, Brutus, and the Trojans from modern-day mainland Europe to Britain. The central section of the work is slower, creating a feeling of longing. Brutus’ son, Locrinus, had agreed to marry Corineus’ daughter, Gwendolen, but instead fell in love with a German princess.

In writing this part of the work, the composer portrays the longing of Gwendolen for her husband, knowing he is in love with somebody else. After Corineus died, Locrinus divorced Gwendolen, who responded by raising an army in Cornwall and making war against her ex-husband. Locrinus was killed in battle, and legend suggests that Gwendolen threw Locrinus’ lover into the River Severn. This dramatic battle provides the inspiration for the final part of the work. In writing this work, the composer hopes to flare the imagination of young brass players around the country, in an engaging new take on a firm fixture in British folklore.
