Alpina Brass was the test piece for the first division of the Fêtes Cantonales on 8 and 9 June 2019 in Naters, Switzerland. It consists of three movements, and features a variety of aspects, as is common for a competition work. However, as a whole, it has been written in such a way that it can perfectly serve as a concert work as well. It is a challenging piece for every section and offers colourful and melodic as well as spectacular rhythmic sequences and a most impressive ending!

Bruce Fraser writes :

"I have been at the top of some of the tallest buildings in the world where the views are just fantastic and beautiful, hence the title ALTA VISTA, meaning high view. During trips to Toronto in Canada, Chicago and New York in the United States of America, I visited the buildings depicted in this work. Suffering from vertigo, I was not the happiest of men when at the top, but I had to be impressed by what I could see.

CN Tower in Toronto was the tallest building in the world at one point and at the top you can look down through a glass floor if you dare. The Empire State Building represents the tall buildings in the city of New York. The Sears Tower in Chicago also was the tallest building in the world at one point. A shockingly fast lift takes you to the top floor, where you can look down on the planes coming in to land and have a terrific view of Lake Michigan.

The themes in the three movements are based on melodies in my Magnificat, written in memory of my younger daughter, Aileen, who died tragically after we returned from a trip to Toronto and New York. The Magnificat is a choral work lasting 50 minutes celebrating her life.
The first movement has lots of syncopated rhythms,”crunchy” chords and semitone clashes to represent the big city. The atmosphere should be of vitality and contrast. Balance is important in letting the melodic lines come through. There is plenty of dynamic contrast to work on and tightness of rhythm is key to achieving the style.

The second movement reflects a quieter, off-beat side of New York and there are lots of layers in the music, which will have to be carefully balanced to let the melody lines stand out. In the section around letter B, keep the quaver feel flowing throughout and the balance should always allow the soloist(s) to shine through.

The third movement has the brashness of the big city with lots of challenging rhythms and big dynamic contrasts. In the build up at letter I, make sure that the volume is only forte, so that the fortissimo is really effective to make a stunning finish.

I hope that you enjoy working on this piece and wish you all success".

ANCIENT MONUMENTS - Parts & Score
Available £83.00

Categories: TEST PIECES (Major Works), LIGHT CONCERT MUSIC
Composer: Bertrand Moren

This three-movement concert work takes its inspiration from the picturesque Swiss town of Sion and its castles and churches dating from the Middle Ages.

Click on MORE DETAILS to listen to an audio extract.

Bertrand Moren attempts to imagine what life was like at the time these great buildings were constructed. With this piece you can take your band back to ancient times, mixing modal religious themes with the gory battles on the town walls!

Ancient Monuments - A Suite in Three Movements

Sion is the capital of the Valais region in southwest Switzerland. This picturesque town is dominated by the famous hills of Valeria (Valère) and Tourbillon that rise from the valley followed by the River lThône. Tourbillon Castle and Valeria Castle, with its famous church tower, date from the Middle Ages and nestle quietly in the hills of the ancient town of Sion,

The piece consists of three contrasting movements:
1. Tourbillon
Although Tourbillon Castle was built as fortress, it was also the home of the noblemen who were in charge of protecting the town against attack. The castle seemed unassailable, but today, apart from the external walls, little is left standing. Thu rbil!on opens with majestic and sonorous chords that introduce the main theme of the movement and give an overview of the castle. A second theme with war-like melodies evokes the many bloody battles that took place on the town walls.

2.Valère (Valeria)
Valeria Church, which is still going strong after more than 800 years, is perched at the top of the steep hill on the southern side of Valais. Masses are still occasionally performed in this magnificent church. A rare gem can be found in Valeria Church, Europe’s oldest playable organ. Some of the world’s greatest organists come to Sion to play on this fabulous instrument. The liturgically inspired music of this movement is serene and is characterised by the use of medal themes. The movement gradually builds in intensity and climaxes in a series of large and stately chords reminding us of the beautiful sound of the organ.

3. Street Scenes
The music of the final movement is extremely lively and joyful. It depicts historical street scenes with taverns and inns crowded with people drinking and dancing, bustling open-air markets, etc. The rhythmical treatment is full of irregular time signatures offering the conductor and musicians the opportunity to prove their skills.

AND WHEN THE RIVER TOLD - Parts & Score
Available £69.99

Category: TEST PIECES (Major Works)
Composer: Simon Dobson

Set as the Test Piece for the Scottish Open Brass Band Contest to be held in Perth Concert Hall on 20th. November 2011.

...and when the river told...

And when the river told it forever had long been happening;
It saw in its midst the place arising and there, people gathering,
These people; clansmen, nomads and more decide upon society...
New gods close the doors and make paupers of those old,
Urd no longer knows the future as surely as it had once told.

And when the river told it, it told it in swirls of red,
Told of a performance of many that left a great many dead,
It told it in battle where it saw men slaughtered like cattle...
But as the river told it, its waters once more ran clear,
The river that had run forever had forgotten the fallen that lay here.

And when the river told it, it had nurtured those that stayed,
Whose trinkets had become industrialised and traded far away,
The town now tells the river in a maelstrom of clutter..
And when the town told it the river was already old; older than old
New ways close the door on old gods and rivers no longer know.

Dan Leahy, 2010

PROGRAMME NOTE
The title “...and when the river told...” is taken from a line in my favourite novel, Herman Hesse’s Siddartha, in which Siddartha contemplates his spirituality whilst sitting next to a river. My work takes Perth’s own great River Tay as its inspiration and attempts to portray the eternal nature of the river in both its never-ending flow and its timelessness. In searching for ways to convey the infinite through music, I have drawn musical inspiration from the Danish composer Per Nørgârd (b. 1932). Adapting his ‘infinity series’ (essentially a mathematical integer), I found a way to produce an infinite stream of material from just two notes and this is where my ‘river-music’ started. Of course, musical line must be linear (and must end) as we live in a world defined by time, but I wanted to imprint within the music a sense of duration beyond all measure.
The River Tay becomes the omnipresent narrator of the work and as such flows throughout the piece in various guises. There are three movements in “...and when the river told...”, but they flow without a break from one to the next. Each one begins with the ancient river and shifts into one of three episodes, centred around a different aspect of Perth and its history in the 800 years since it was granted a charter in 1210 by King William the Lion of Scotland confirming it as a Royal Burgh.

[1] ...and so the river flows...
From primaeval times comes a river unchanged by one event or another
Bagpipes can be heard drifting across the landscape.

[2] ...the charter is granted...and a storm rages...
The river swells and pipers proclaim the arrival of the royal party here to confer the charter upon the town. Amidst fanfares and regalia, the river breaks its banks and a storm washes away the only bridge to the town.

[3] ...and still the river flows...
The storm is a distant memory. All is calm. The water flows placidly, but
a sense of sadness and foreboding prevails.

[4] ...the clan baffle of North Inch...
In 1396 a gladiatorial battle took place at North Inch between the two clans of the Chattans and the Kays. Each clan fielded 30 men (one enlisted a local harness maker to even the numbers) and a fight to the death ensued. The writings on this event contain the first literary mentions of Scottish bagpipes ‘screaming their maddening notes’. A chorale for the dead follows.

[5] ...and on the river flows...
Once again the ancient river is party to the restless centuries and its waters are ever in use...

6] . . .from glass and dye to modern times...
The close of the work sees the change in industry surrounding the now mighty Perth from the traditional (whisky, glass and dyeing) to the modern digital age.
Simon Dobson, 2010

ANGEL of the NORTH - Parts & Score
Available £85.20

Category: TEST PIECES (Major Works)
Composer: Richard Grantham

Grade - Very Difficult
Duration 13.15

Angel of the North takes as its inspiration Anthony Gormley's iconic statue which is located at Gateshead in Northern England. It stands majestically on the southern edge of Low Fell, overlooking the A1 and A167 roads into Tyneside and the East Coast Main Line rail route, south of Team Colliery.
The angel is a steel sculpture, 20 metres tall, with wings measuring 54 metres. The wings do not stand straight sideways, but are angled 3.5 degrees forward; Gormley did this to create "a sense of embrace".
Angel of the North begins quietly and builds to an early climax before a brief, more mysterious interlude leads to the first statement of one of the key melodic ideas; a fluid theme in 3 time. An exciting development section dashes towards the central, more reflective section. These elements then blend and change as the piece progresses through various moods until a triumphant return of the main idea closes the piece in a blaze of glory!

Richard Grantham has emerged in recent years as one of the most sort after composers and arrangers for brass and wind of his generation. He was born in Sheffield and studied Music at Huddersfield Polytechnic. He is a former Principal Cornet of The National Youth Brass Band and winner of the prestigious Alexander Owen Memorial Scholarship. While at Huddersfield, he studied composition with Richard Steinitz and Peter Lawson, Trumpet with David James and conducting with John Gulley. While at Huddersfield, Richard was awarded the Peabody Holmes Prize for outstanding achievement in both his second and final years of study.
During the next 20 years, much of Richard's musical focus was on performing and conducting where he performed with some of the UK's top brass bands and worked as a free-lance trumpeter. Throughout this time though, he continued to compose and arrange music for a variety of ensembles. Brass Quartet No.1 was premiered at Hull University in 1995 and the Tuba Quartet 'Celtic Festival' at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in 1998.
In recent years, Richard's compositions and arrangements have been performed, broadcast and recorded throughout the world. His major works for brass have been chosen for a number of prestigious competitions including Butlins Mineworkers Festival (Hostile Skies 2009) National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain (Darkness Visible 2011) and the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (Angel of the North 2012)
